"NCPO spokesman Colonel Winthai Suvari told The Nation in a phone interview that |the Dao Din movement was not a big deal but more of a symbolic act. He complained that "they have never utilised any channel of communications set up by state authorities"

They may not have been a big deal before but your actions have changed that.

Possibly they have not used your channels of communication because they represent what they are protesting against.

Be rather nice if Ferangs who support these spotty gobs could be deported back to Lefty Land..

And the Non so blind as those who will not see Junta supporters off to North Korea?

But if this were to happen who would be left to post on TV?

Even more significant was the gathering of support after the arrest. It won't take much before this turns into 10's of thousands. Fingers crossed.

This reminds me of the "you could be a redneck jokes".

First, "redneck" in American parlance generally means a fat, lazy, opinionated bigot, whose brain has been fried by too much drinking and too much time in the sun."

So here goes:

If you grew up in the US, Canada, the UK, anywhere else in Western Europe, Australia, New Zealand, or just about any other democratic country in the world,

And if you managed to survive ages 16 to 24 despite your loud mouth and rude behaviors,

And now in your later years you think the Thai college students deserve being arrested,

........YOU could be a REDNECK!

<deleted>! Making up lies to support their fascist views is a feature of this government & their supporters.

Here is the comment to the tweet;

At 12:30a.m. 14 students have been imprisoned at Bangkok remand prison for a period of 12 days. Their friends came together to light candles and insist that the movement would continue

Amazing to see that some people on this forum don't know that the incidences of extreme violence in the history of Thailand have all been committed by the army against their own people.

If it is true and these students are being backed by political parties, they should be punished to the full extent of the law, especially if they are getting paid..! If they are genuine and protesting from the heart, first they should ask their own countrymen why they sold their very valuable votes for 500 bahts. They should try to teach the older folks what democracy really means....

They should organise a strong student body and take up talks with the present government .

But no, they look for publicity... who is the publicity for..! A certain man in Dubai maybe..

There will be free and fair elections within the next 2 years... patience young men..! Get your education first .. wai2.gif

the students view the current "government" as illegitimate - why would they "take up talks" with an illegitimate body?

Yawn.

Arrest, a few cookies and milk "at the station", a stern warning, and back to class in the morning. It's been going on at campuses around the world for as long as there have been students.

Now the students have a story to tell back at the dorm.

Wake me up if they start pulling out fingernails.

Would you care to offer another comment now in light of Post #27?

They were offered a chance to go home on bail. They declined. Voluntarily. They still have all their fingernails.

"The students said that in civilised countries, freedom of expression was a major premise of education."

In civilised countries, thinking and learning are the major premises of education.whistling.gif

Give it a rest will you, and same goes for all you student bashers who keep saying "they should be in school studying"

Lots of leading world politicians all protested at rallies including Ghandi himself, students all over the globe love a good protest, it's all part of being a student, your pious attitudes towards students who have more say about their country than the whining elitist farangs on here just beggars belief.

You think they don't know the risks? It's only a matter of time before their numbers swell, and then what will Prayuth do? Listen to their concerns, or shut them up and suppress the future of the country even more.

These Junta dinosaurs need to get a grip, because one day they're going to get bitten really badly and it will be their own fault.

And they have the gall to question the U.S. Over human rights!!

Stop being a bully Prayuth, and start listening to other people's concerns and opinions!!

They may well be illegitimate but they currently rule the roost and senseless protests will never change that, better to bite the bullet and step back a little "Softly, Softly, Catchee Monkey"

However, for all we know- they maybe getting paid and being lead up the garden path by "others".

These courageous young students are the best hope for the future of this country. Remember their actions and their names. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if they played a major political role in (hopefully) better times ahead.

The student should first lobby their own school to change how they educate students. It starts at the school. Make small changes in the school system first. These students have no idea what they are doing. Doing things blindly.

A few people here saying that students shouldn't be involved in political protests but instead should keep their heads down and in their books. Well, if you've read any history, you'll know that it's often the students who go out on the streets--not uncommonly at the risk of their own lives--to confront oppressive governments. That's because 1) they have less to lose [no jobs to lose, no family to support] and 2) they are at a point in their lives when they are being exposed to new ideas and must think in more abstract terms [they can question the assumptions of their leaders rather than focusing on how to get that next promotion]. That is why we see students out front of popular protest movements, with the general public often only coming in when they see cracks in the leadership's position. Think:

South Korea's April uprising (that led to the downfall of the president)

Soweto Uprising

1960s anti-Vietnam protests (led eventually to the US pull-out)

Tienanmen Square

Velvet Revolution of Czechoslovakia (led to the end of communism there)

Iran Student Protests

Hong Kong Pro-Democracy Protests

...and countless more (not to mention past student protests/massacres in Bangkok)

Not all of these protests had immediate results... some even led to greater oppression for a while. But that's not the fault of the students so much as a matter of timing. And they all irrevocably changed nations and how those nations are/were viewed by the rest of the world.

Well said Docno :-) Students are the future and many have helped to change the world. These few courageous young people are showing the way forward whilst others dwell in the past settling old scores rather than starting a new page in Thailand's history.
