Hi, I have absolutely no idea about games but was given a 2nd hand xbox in the UK for my kids in thailand. The UK games work fine but any games bought in thailand do not work. As the xbox unit is from UK, does this mean that it will only accept games from UK.

If that is the case, does anyone have any old uk games they no longer want?

Yes you will need to buy EU Region games.

There can be 2 problems:

1. games are region locked (PS3 doesn't have this issue)

2. Your XBox is not chipped to play pirate games, if you pay lower than 800-1000 bht per game here (150-250) bht here its a copied game and it will not work on original unmodified xbone.
