Hotels, lifeguards clear Phuket beaches of monsoon trash tide

Trash lines Patong Beach before the major cleanup operation.

PHUKET: Hotel staffers and lifeguards at key Phuket beaches, including Patong and Surin Beach, have taken to the sands in teams to clear up the tide of trash swept onto Phuket’s western coast by the current strong monsoon winds.

Staffers and representatives from the Patong Hotel Association as well as lifeguards and beach business operators today (July 3) joined forces to clear debris that washed ashore at Patong and Kalim Beach.

“Our staffers also organise a big beach cleanup on the first Friday of the month,” said Sasinut Wongsrinark of Patong Municipality’s Public Health and Environment division, which is responsible for keeping Patong Beach clean.

The timing worked out well, she added, as the monthly cleanup coincided with the recent surge of trash onto the beaches.

At Surin, lifeguards and workers form the Cherng Talay Tambon Administration Organisation (OrBorTor) teamed up to clear the beach of trash and other debris.

“Strong waves brought ashore lots of marine trash, “said Cherng Talay OrBorTor chief Ma’ann Samran. “This is normal for this time of year because of the strong wind and current caused by the southwest monsoon.

“Lifeguards also helped us to clean up the beach even though it was not their duty. They did it because of their public consciousness. They collected pieces of wood, large timbers, trash, cigarette butts and plastic bags. All of this is dangerous for tourists and the environment.”

Prathaiyut Chuayuan of the Phuket Life Guard Service, told The Phuket News, “At the moment, there is no authority responsible for keeping Surin Beach clean, so we we were happy to co-operate with Cherng Talay OrBorTor to help clean up the garbage and to return the beach to its usual beautiful state.

Good to see the hotels stepping up to help clean the beaches. They obviously understand that a good deal of their livelihood depends upon tourists' perception of the beach.

Interesting to note that there's no mention of the people who (legally or otherwise) operate their businesses directly on the beach helping out.

Yes there is. Can't you read? Here's the quote from the article. Look for three words; beach business operators.

Such a sad bunch on this forum. Why bother actually reading the post before replying with some kind of negative post or other...

Apologies - you're right, I missed that phrase.

I think it was just my frustration coming through after seeing these guys day after day just sitting there in the midst of washed up garbage doing nothing to help maintain the public land upon which they conduct their business every day. I guess one day of effort from these guys is better than nothing.

Yes, this is quite often correct. However in this case he made a positive post with a question at the end, And yes, he had overlooked something before asking the question, but it really was not a negative post.

When people stop throwing crap in the streets, klongs and beaches, you wont have this filth floating up on these wonderful beaches. And this is one product that Thais can be proudly labeled "Made in Thailand".

Sure some will come from neighbors, but commonsense tells you most is generated in Thailand.

Living at the ocean is great, but the trash does come in from the ocean at times.

Here is a couple pictures of an island nation, who depends mostly on tourism, but it had the

attitude that it was not their responsibility to clean up all the beach. This country suffered a few years until

they realized that the tourists do not like to vacation at a garbage dump.

This was NOT Thailand , but is located in the Pacific ocean!
