Can't get IP address from PPoE server (TOT Home)

I access the internet using TOT's 'Home' ADSL service.

The TPLink wireless router supplied by TOT is a pile of poo, very unstable and the O/S cannot easily be modified to enable other services, (such as a wifi captive hotspot).

I prefer to use Linksys WRT54GL routers.

However, when I swap out the TPLink router for the Linksys, and configure the latter with the same user name, password etc, I get the error message 'Can't get IP address from PPoE server', when I save my router config settings and the router attempt to connect to the TOT service.

Does one have to use a TPLink router for TOT Home internet service? (ie, is there some hidden config that restricts other routers from being used in place of the TPLink?

Suggestions and advice are welcome :)

I'm using my own modem to connect to ToT ADSL.

Check that you have correct VPI and VCI values:

VPI = 1

VCI = 32

PPPoE LL

Futhermore WRT54GL is a router, not a modem. Are you still using the TP-link as a modem in front of the Linksys?

In previous times I used ToT ADSL and changed the cheapo access point with something better.

No problem.

Since a while I have ToT fibre. Again changed the router with my device (setting it a WiFi router mode).

No problem.

So I would say, that there is no lock to a certain device.

But can't help what the problem at your site is...

I am using a TD-W8968 which I bought in Thailand.

I assume you have also purchased the WRT54GL in Thailand?

Is there an appendix ("-XX") to the "WRT54GL" on the label?

Excuse me for being a complete prat.... cheesy.gif

I usually use the Linksys as a router at one of my small hotels, connected via 100 metres of CAT5 to the TPLink modem/router at another of my hotels nearby, (I do this because TOT was unable to provide internet service at the hotel ==> no telephone line available and the rubber trees blocked the wilan service from the airport).

So in my rush to replace the TPLink, I went and bought another Linksys WR54GL, completely forgetting that it is only a router and not a modem!!

I wondered where the VCI/VPI setting config was...

Oh well, I can make good use of this router on another project.

So............... what is a good model of ADSL modem/wireless+LAN router to buy?

Simon (highly embarassed for being a techie dumbo today)

No need.... put the tplink in bridge mode and connect it to the wrt54 wan port.

Configure the wrt in pppoe mode and you have the benefits of the wrt using the tplink as a basic modem which it does well.

If you put a 3rd party modem instead then every time the engineers come to check a problem they will blame the device they dont know.... their device in bridge is generally best.

Presume since you have wrt54 you are using dd-wrt or tomato? If so will all work well.

Yep.

TOT ADSL Provisioning

ADSL Mode: Automatic Sync-Up (ADSL2+)

Annex Type: Annex A/L (though A, A/L, M, or A/L/M may be provisioned on DSLAM)

Mode: Routing

Encapsulating: PPPoE

Username: Y<number>@tothome (or as provided at time of provisioning)

Pass: (as provided at time of provisioning)

Multiplexing: LLC

VPI : 1
VCI : 32
Authentication: PAP
MTU: 1492
IP Address: Obtain IP address automatically

I've noticed that some off-the-shelf consumer adsl2+ modem/routers won't sync consistently, or at all, while the TOT provided TP-Link would do so fine ...but eventually fail. I think my telco line was out of spec. Lots and lots of issues.

Been on TOT Fibre2U for a year now

No issues -- Well, the Fibre Optic infrastructure here in my area is brand new from stem to stern so it should keep afloat above the waterline for a wee bit yet.
