Phuket woman, 36, found hanged with suicide letter apologizing over lost B400,000

PHUKET: -- Mueang Phuket Police were alerted this morning that a maid had found the body of a suspected suicide victim, hanged on an apartment stairwell in Rassada.

Police arrived to the scene, the top floor of a four-storey apartment on Soi Panieng 3, and were led to the woman’s body, which was in a sitting position and whose legs were stretched out, alongside the hand rail.

There was white nylon cloth wrapped around her neck, which was attached to the latch of the door that leads out to the rooftop.

The victim was wearing flip-flops, a grey tee and pink shorts with a ring of several keys attached. On the victim’s person, police found a mobile phone and a letter with an apologetic farewell message handwritten on it.

The letter read: “I’m sorry to mom, dad and big brother for hanging myself. I’m not try to escape the problem but I have no way of paying back the money to big brother. I didn’t make the story up, and next life, I hope I can be born the child of mom and dad again ...”

Having read the letter, police were able to identify the victim as 36-year-old Ms Jantana Siengdee, a Phuket resident, who had on Friday night (July 3) filed a police report about being robbed of B400,000 by two unidentified men on motorbikes, who had allegedly kicked her bike down on Soi Pracha-uthit in Rassada-Sam Kong area, before taking the lump of cash and fleeing.

Police said the victim reported that she had been carrying the cash after collecting it from a hotel employee who paid back the money after previously borrowing the sum from her big brother.

Ms Jantana told police that she was planning to deposit the cash into a bank account so her big brother could pay for a wedding this November.

After initial questioning on Friday night, police said they sent Ms Jantana home and made an appointment with her to resume questioning on Saturday morning (July 4).

But when she did not turn up for the appointment, police said they attempted to call her on the phone number she had provided to them, at least 10 times, but to no avail.

Tenants at the apartment told investigators that at about 2am early this morning, they had heard sounds of someone going up the stairs out to the roof, but thought nothing of it, until the maid discovered the body in the morning.

From the initial investigation, police believe the body had been lifeless for at least four hours before they had arrived to the scene.

Based on available evidence, police speculate that the woman had committed suicide because she was stressed about losing the B400,000, and that someone did not believe her story about being robbed.

The hotel employee who repaid the money should be under intense questioning by the police.

This story painfully reminds me of a mother who took her daughter's $10,000 CDN wedding fund to a local casino. No, she did not hit a jackpot!

She was found hanged in a casino washroom stall, minus $10,000.

Like this story, sad but true.

Is there proof that the money was actually repaid? Or is that a "story" ?

this is indeed a sad tale the money could have been verified by the hotel employee she received the money from . she committed suicide because she thought no one would believe her story of being robbed. rip .

she was robbed of 400,000 baht by 2 unidentified men, how did they know she was carrying such a large sum of money ? was it a random act or a fit up ? I have my doubts about this case .rip to the poor woman .

Clearly her unsophisticated lies did not hold up to scrutiny. Probably no witnesses or CCTV to back up her claims. if big brother loaned money to the employee, why did she unnecessarily insert herself into the repayment? My guess is gambling debt and it would have come out eventually. So now she loses face within family and likely facing charges for lying to the police. Too much to bear.

The money owed should have been deposited in her bank account by the debtor, or the handover should have taken place in a bank, for immediate deposit.

Walking around with 400,000 baht, with someone knowing you are, is dangerous here.

Even large withdrawals from a bank, money changers, sale of a car / property etc is dangerous.

Too many "informants / spotters" here.
