BANGKOK: -- Tap water shortage in Bangkok's suburb Pathumthani is slowly eased today after the Royal Irrigation Department says it will supply raw water for the Thanyaburi provincial waterworks to produce tap water.

Residents in Pathumthani was hit by water shortage since last week after Klong Rapeepat, the main canal that supplies raw water to produce tap water ran dry.

Hardest hit are those living in Thanyaburi, Nong Sua and Lamlukka districts where tap water supplies ran slowly and later ceased since yesterday and people lived without water for household use.

The acute water shortage prompted local authorities to mobilise 136 trucks to load water to supply to the troubled people.

The military also sent several water trucks to distribute fresh water to the people.

But since a large area was affected, some residents who were not distributed were angry. More trucks will be sent in to ease their troubles today.

Pathumthani governor Pongsatorn Sajjacholaphand said the Provincial Waterworks Authority Thanyaburi branch was expected to supply tap water to the people in the three districts tonight.

The governor also said that farmers along the Rapeepat canal were asked to stop pumping water for farm use during this period so that the water plant could draw raw enough water to produce tap water for drinking and for household use.

Special task force comprising district officials, police and soldiers were set up to patrol along the canal road to watch out if any farmer pump water for tap water production for farming.

Good to see help was swift and genuine. I hope it rains there soon and really pours! We finally have rain here the past few days, very heavy as one would expect during rainy season. The rice should be fine.
