Myanmar agrees to reconstruct dyke in Chiang Rai

CHIANG RAI, 14 July 2015 (NNT) – Authorities in Chiang Rai have reached an agreement with their Myanmar counterparts to reconstruct a dyke in Mae Sai District to ease the shortages in water for cultivation.

The Mae Sai District Chief Somchai Rungsakorn, along with the Deputy Commander of Phamuang Force Col Songyot Thongkon oversaw the coordination of the local Thai-Myanmar Border Consortium (TBC) for the reconstruction of the Ban Mueang Ngam dyke which stores water supply for cultivation purposes in 12,600 rais of farmland in 2 subdistricts of Chiang Rai.

The situation yesterday was reported to be tense, as Myanmar officials used an excavator vehicle to destroy 3 dykes despite protests of approximately 200 locals, who blocked the roadway at the Thai border post for the first Thailand-Myanmar Friendship Bridge.

The Myanmar authority cited the agreement in the previous Thailand-Myanmar Regional Border Committee (RBC) meeting in Chiang Mai, on the destruction of 3 dykes in the area to alleviate flooding at Tachileik, a border area market located at the Thailand-Myanmar border in Mae Sai District, Chiang Rai province.

It is reported that Myanmar authorities misunderstood the agreement that states that the destruction of dykes can be performed initially, only at the Wieng Hom dyke, prior to the destruction of the other two dykes.

The Mae Sai District Chief said that he and the related agencies had been working to negotiate with Myanmar on the solutions for this issue, and the Myanmar authority has only agreed to reconstruct the Ban Mueang Ngam dyke first. More action is expected after hearing the locals' opinions to any ill effects on the people of both countries living and working along this water path.

So many 'misunderstandings' around here. I don't think I've ever heard the word used quite so often in situations where one should never expect to hear it at all.

I can't quite understand the specs. Can we see a hand-drawn map? I've hung out at places along that little river, and can't picture where the dyke issues are. Ok, upon further reflection, they're probably just east of Mae Sai - the area is all flat farmland.
