PATTAYA: -- A combined force of immigration, tourist and Chonburi police raided three single houses in three housing estates in Bang Lamung last night and arrested 11 South Koreans for illegally operating online gambling in the country.

Of the 11 Koreans detained for questioning, one suspect is a woman.

All the three single houses rented to operate online gambling for Koreans outside the country belong to same online gambling network, police said.

The gang rented luxury houses covering a large space of land from 100-400 square wah in Bang Lamung which is adjacent to Pattaya City to operate.

The first raid was made shortly before midnight at Wonderland housing estate on Soi Photisarn in Tambon Na Klua of Bang Lamung district where four Korean men were arrested.

Eight computers which bet orders from Korean customers were keyed in for football match were seized.

They admitted to receive bets from 145 Korean customers amounted to 800,000 baht last night for a football match.

A second raid was at Impress House housing estate on Soi Siam Country Club where the two-storey single house is located on a vast 400 square wah land. The house has a swimming pool inside.

Arrested at this luxury mansion were three Korean men and a Korean woman.

All were sitting in front of their computers taking online orders from Korean clients, police said.

Police checked all the computers and found online bets in one month amounted to over 11 million baht.

The group is a network of the Korean group arrested at Wonderland housing estate.

The last raid after midnight at Greenery housing estate netted another three Koreans.

All the eleven Koreans were later taken to Bang Lamung police station for questioning with 20 computers seized.

They will be charged for operating online gambling illegally, police said.

The success in the crackdown followed cooperation between Thai and South Korean police.

I don't get it. Why don't these Korean gamblers place their own online bets? Why are they paying some random group of Koreans in houses to do it for them?

And why are these groups of Koreans doing this in Thailand?

Or maybe these are Korean bookies setting up shop in Thailand, taking bets over the Internet?

If so, why in Thailand? They think somehow this is safer than doing it in the RoK?

Is online gambling illegal in S-Korea? I do not believe so , I think they have online gambling sites based in Seoul . So really strange they choose Thailand. Any Korean expat living here can also use online sites in S-Korea or other countries legally. Unless it's criminals who's placing the bets.

Why didn't the Koreans set up shop in a jurisdiction where online gambling is legal ? Or am I missing something ?
