Hello, hoping for some friendly help…!

I've been working at a university in chiang mai for 11 years, about to finish working end of next week, so will lose my non-imm B visa which i annually renewed along with the work permit.

I am british, 51, live in chiang mai, and am legally wed. I am planning to extend my visa through my marriage now that my work permit will no longer support me.

I have had no help from my workplace yet, but i understand my visa will expire seven days after my work permit is surrendered, unless of course i apply for the marriage visa extension. I have had over 400k baht in my account for more than two months.

I'm wondering what documents i will need to take with me, and if anybody has gone through a similar experience. Am i also unplanned for anything unforeseen? Will something unexpected be awaiting me, based on the information i have given here?!

Many thanks.

Doubt that you actually have a visa . Your extension of stay will end on the day when your employment finishes. You can apply for a 7 day extension at a cost of 1900 Bht at the immigration office.

I think you will need to obtain an Non O visa on the basis of marriage at a Thai Embassy /consulate and then apply for a extension of stay , based on marriage, during the last 30 days of the 90 day stay the O visa will provide.

You can, of course , ask immigration if they will change the reason for your extension of stay but you may have difficulty as there is not much time.

Get a retirement visa... if you are 50 years old you can get it but you need to show Baht 800,000 in you bank account... there are brokers who do this you pay aboyt 12,000 to 15,000 baht for the whole process --- in bangkok that is...

Visas are never renewed !

You have an extension of stay check in your passport

You should check with immigration to see if they will allow you to change the reason for your extension of stay (it is not a visa) from teaching to one based upon marriage. If not you would need to go out for a single entry non-o visa.

In order to do the change you will need a termination letter dated for the date you go to do the change.

If you need more time you could apply for a 60 day extension to visit your wife. You would need the termination letter to do this also.

I assume you mean a termination letter from my workplace?

I understand that we get extensions of stay, and i've been getting mine annually supported by my work permit. But surely these extensions are to my original visa?

I have found a list of requirements somewhere on thaivisa which state (from the translation) that i need a non-immigrant visa, it does not say if this should be an O or any other type, just non-imm. So i do assume my B will be okay. However i would understand if they said no, i needed an O, since i won't be on business any more.

Do you know ubonjoe about any grace period i may get? Do i need to visit immigration before my work permit is surrendered, or within seven days after it is surrendered?

I may take your advice and go see immigration, but this is not an attractive option living in chiang mai.

There is no free 7 days.

The date your work permit is cancelled is not all that relevant as far as immigration is concerned. They will not know about it unless you notify them yourself. Technically your extension ends on the date the work permit is canceled.

Yes it is a termination letter from your employer stating the date your job ends. That is what immigration will want.

It is correct that all that is required is non immigrant visa entry to apply for the extension. Up to about a year ago it was normal procedure to change the reason for an extension but many offices will not do it now. You need to check with immigration to see what they will do. Don't ask them about changing visa classes because that is not possible for non immigrant visas.

As I wrote before you could apply for the 60 day extension. They should allow that even if they will not do the one year extension change.
