The Nation

BANGKOK: -- A 24-year-old worker has been arrested for allegedly stealing three boxes of baby milk powder for his starving one-year-old toddler.

Police said Preecha Patto was captured by staffs of Tesco Lotus Express in Chon Buri's Mueang district at 7 pm and was handed over to police.

He was found with three boxwes of Nutricia Hi-Q Super Gold. He was taken to the Samed police station for taking legal actions.

He said he had to steal the milk powder because his employer owed him his salary for over 15 days and his one-year-old boy was starving.

release him. 500 baht fine. public service for one month.

arrest his employer. 30,000 baht fine.

everyone donate some spare baht for baby.

Next case.

Yes, all that is true.... but why?

Where is the community, the common good, the local Temple, or foundation or The Thai Red Cross Society??? Why did he have to resort to such an understandable, but very very expensive, method of feeding his child???

Isn't that why we give to charity? So the charities can help support the vulnerable and give them a steer in life??

If salary is 15 days behind payment for the fellow, as claimed, by a man, and his 1 year old son is not being breast fed along with some semi solid foods (baby food) due to the employee not receiving salary owed, management of his employer should be physically picked up from residence/work/or where ever he is and physically brought to answer this accusiation in person at the police station. .I would wager the owner/manager has a mobil phone so he can be located and met by police at 0700 And I am not referring to the manager of some little shoe shine stand. that we see scattered around the country., but someone of authority who can verify and correct/pay the salary owed, issue a public apology and pay a inconvience fee of a couple milliom baht. Legal procedenings should then be turned over to the labor department, police and any other authority who might have jurisdiction over such matters

Now if the detained is just shoplifting to have something of value to sell to someone with small babies or maybe he wants to cut illegal drugs with milk powder, then there are numerous options that should/could be used to discourage such behavior. If the present government being run by military trained people cannot nor will not employee effective methods of discourgement they should be stripped of rank, uniform, pension and sent to the facility where the retarded are confined.

Why is it that the police don't know for sure his reasoning behind this crime and it is still alleged? A farang can have his throat cut with hands tied behind his back and hanging from a rope and they know instantly he killed himself!

What a shame for manager of tesco lotus and employed..

couldn't they settle the matter privately in the backroom?

They would have had he been well dressed and said "Do you know who I am?"

This guy was poor. And we all know what happens to the poor.

The monks cannot get involved they are too busy gold-leafing their temples. Bang Saray has at least 7 temples dripping in gold whilst the poor contribute their food money. Prayuth should turn his attention to the clergy.

Have you actually MET any of the people to whom you refer? You miss the point entirely of Thai 'charity'. There isn't any.

The common good? Open your eyes.

Or ever actually visited Thailand?

The Monks here don't give unless it's a publicity stunt.

Why arrest his employer and fine him 30.000 baht? His employer stole NOTHING!!!

Him are 24y. Why him not asked his employer for money? Or mother, father, sister, friend, ..., But no, him stole it and blame another!!!

Maybe the employer pay the salary once the month. Maybe him paid but the young man gone drinking with his friends or Play Cards last weekend .

How someone can write stupid comments like you if don't know the real facts!!!

If making a post/comment ''without knowing the real facts ''on thai visa, which is normally based on what is reported by Thai reporters, is your standard for stupid, you may have just set the upper limit of stupid comments above the reach of most of the members on thai visa.

You may well be right seeing it is a Lotus Express and not a bigger store but there are a number of different types and sizes. Some of the boxes I've seen before on the shelves in Tesco are 1500+ baht.

why Tesco Lotus should feed his baby? he committed a crime and should be punished because he is a sane adult and should be responsible for his actions.

Lets see the baby, is it actually 'starving'? very doubtful.

If he stole liquor or cigarettes, that would be something else. What do you think he would do with baby formula?

This seems to be a copy cat tactic sweeping the Country with the Thief thinking the Police will just release him/her with a smack on the wrist but no excuse. Charity of one kind or another is Thai Culture and no one needs to starve. Simply, theft is theft.

Liquor and cigarettes are usually kept behind the counter so not easy to shoplift. As to what he would do with baby formula, same as with a lot of shoplifted items, sell them off at a discount and pocket the cash.

Maybe he has a son, maybe he hasn't. Has it been confirmed?

In a past life I heard some very convincing stories from people caught stealing, pleading to be let off with a warning only for the truth to emerge later i.e. their excuse was just a story.
