NRC whips to name the day for referendum strategy talks
THE NATION

BANGKOK: -- NATIONAL Reform Council whips will meet next Thursday to decide when they will discuss the NRC's question for the national referendum on the new constitution and what will be on the agenda. The NRC will concentrate on the blueprint of the national reform, which must be submitted to |the Cabinet on August 13, NRC whip Alongkorn Ponlaboot said yesterday.

The meeting would be chaired by NRC president Thienchay Kiran-anda.

"After August 13, the NRC will work on matters related to the referendum," said Alongkorn, adding that the schedule of the process would be set during the meeting with the NRC president August 6.

The decision on whether to |submit a question for the referendum would be discussed by the NRC after August 13, Alongkorn emphasised.

For the moment, it is likely that the NRC will decide whether or not to adopt the draft charter between September 5 and 7, he said.

Speaking about the idea of the NRC members on this issue, he said, "Some have proposed the question on reconciliation. However, this remains a personal view at this stage."

Meanwhile, NRC member Paiboon Nititawan said he was studying the details of the issue and was preparing to present the proposal during an NRC meeting.

"In the first place, I was informed that the NRC will meet and talk about this matter," he said.

His proposal was perceived as being in line with the one of People's Democratic Reform Foundation (PDRF) to allow a two-year reform before the election.

Paiboon admitted that his proposal might correspond to the proposal made by the PDRF; however, it has nothing to do with the proposal of Suthep Thaugsuban, the PDRF president who just left the monkhood this week.

"This is an adequate moment to put forward a reform process because people have been calling for reform," Paiboon said.
