Govt Officials React to Suthep's Return to the Spotlight
By Khaosod English

BANGKOK – Officials from Thailand’s military government have starting responding to calls from former protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban to complete national reforms – “no matter how long it takes” – before returning democracy to Thailand.

Suthep, who led the street protests that culminated in the May 2014 coup, made the comments in a press conference yesterday that marked his official return to secular life after spending a year as a monk in southern Thailand.

According to the military government’s "road map to democracy," an election will be held in September 2016 if the junta’s new constitution is approved in a national referendum. Under the current draft of the charter, an elected government would be required to carry out reform plans laid down by the National Reform Council, which was appointed by the junta last year to spearhead the post-coup reform effort.

Speaking to reporters today, government spokesperson Maj.Gen. Sansern Kaewkamnerd said that junta chairman and Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha has already been informed of Suthep's remarks, "and he has ordered me not to express any political comments.'

"The Prime Minister only wants me to answer specific questions about works of the government," Maj.Gen. Sansern said. "Let me assure you that the government is fully moving along with the road map."

Asked whether he believes Suthep is pressuring the government with his demands, Maj.Gen. Sansern said, "If we listened to and followed Mr. Suthep's demand, then the government would have to comply with everything that this side or that side demands. It's impossible. Our duty is to solve problems for our country."

They are already complying with most of what Suthep wished anyway..... :)

Not puppet I think. Just part of the same network, and sharing more or less the same view and strategy. Of course they may also compete for a better power position in the network.

Suthep is nothing more than a sideshow, and a deflection of more pressing issues.

The Economy isn't looking great, cue a distraction, the reforms over education, police, judiciary, aviation, fishing, water management are at a stand still, cue the distraction.

This reformation foundation is the PDRC that Suthep said he doesn't want to get involved in politics, but just did, it's the same party that said they will not interfere in politics, but just did.

The Junta will do nothing about this, you don't keep poking rabid dogs.

Watch this space as boundaries are pushed.

Can we have the NACC investigate all these people involved and have them declare their assets too, as wasn't there a law passed recently about begging? How will this group be financed ?

So he who is not-a-dictator orders Suthep not to talk about politics but he does.. His answer? To tell his own government spokesperson not to make any political comment. Next they will wondering why students think it's okay to gather in a group of more than 5... The the red shirt types will be wondering why they get sent for adjustment when they want to talk together but Suthep doesn't? Suthep saying there must be reform before any elections, Thaksin says in an interview that the Junta are not moving quickly enough - charged with treason.... Oh.. Anybody want to hazard a guess how this will end up?

Quote Oh.. Anybody want to hazard a guess how this will end up? unquote. Well here is my guess Suthep will get the citizen of the century award. Is there a Thai version of the Croix de Guerre? and kiss him on both cheeks which cheeks?

They are all just jockeying for position. The army has the head start and Suthep's mob need to claw back some lost ground. Just now they have a common enemy so won't attack each other. Once that enemy is out of the picture they will turn on themselves in a fight to the death.

Thailand is approaching a major change in the social order and the only thing stopping either of these groups from being dominant, is democracy.
