TAT aims to raise 2 trillion baht from tourism in 2016

BANGKOK, 4 August 2015 (NNT) – Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) aims to generate 2 trillion baht in tourism income for the year 2016, and encourages all Thai nationals to travel with their mother during August.

TAT’s Deputy Governor for International Marketing Juthaporn Rerngronasa has said that the Thai tourism industry during the first half of this year went as expected. The large amount of tourists traveling to Thailand has helped in generating much income to the country.

She said that this was a result of the government’s policy that focuses on tourism this year. Campaigns representing the Thai identity, such as Discover Thainess, enticed both international and Thai tourists to travel the country all year round.

Though the campaign was launched last year, promotion abroad helped attract even more foreign tourists to experience Thailand. New tourism activities had also been introduced this year during the first five months, successfully drawing 12.48 million tourists to visit Thailand, a 25 percent growth compared to last year. Income from tourism this year is recorded at 592 billion baht.

The International Marketing Deputy Governor has elaborated on the number of tourists, saying that 65 percent of the tourists come from Asia, while 25 percent are from Europe. The number of Russian tourists has significantly declined due to the depreciation of the Russian currency, the ruble.

TAT is now aiming to generate income from tourism in 2016 at approximately 2.33 trillion baht, with a focus on attracting the mid-level tourists through activities that encourage more spending.

TAT is planning to hold roadshow events at new cities in foreign countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, England, France, and China. These promotional events will increase Thai tourism awareness in foreign markets, the International Marketing Deputy Governor has said.

She also encouraged Thai nationals to travel domestically with their mothers during August, in a campaign that celebrates the month of Mother’s Day through various activities on holidays, weekends, and even weekdays.

More scams schemes like the proposed 35 baht additional airport charge will be dreamed up to make good shortfalls.

Less tourists - charge them more. invent more surcharges. Bound to work. Less people more money - less pesky foreigners to worry about.

Thai innovation at its finest.

What a hopeless load of bull again .....

Let's face it, if TAT would be a private enterprise the shareholders would fire the board of directors; the new board would fire the rest of those pencil pushing clowns and replace them with professionals. Being here for three decades I see that 10 - 12 million serious money spenders from the capitalistic West enjoyed holidays here until they get screwed with all sorts of funny visa models, elite cards, rip offs starting upon arrival with the taxi mafia and on leaving the Kingdom with rip offs by the Kingpower mafia pretending "thefts"; money controls, lack of English, dual pricing .... the works.

The Russians took over, more difficult to cheat as they spoke as good Russians as the hosts spoke Thai; meanwhile the Russians stay home which is not the fault of Thailand; jumping straight into the Chinese spitting images, the Middle Eastern curtain-dressed fidels and bus loads of Southasian holiday makers.

Without looking into the crystal ball; the volume as 2.5 folded over the last 15 years whereas the revenue (and subsequently the profits) contracted. TAT is not aware that more tourism-jobbers achieve less and less per head.

I just wait for the 9trillionth visitor at Swampi - must happen anytime soon if TAT is counting wai2.gif

My first thought was "what ripoffs on farang are they going to think up next?".

Dual pricing in hotels, transport, restaurants, bars?

They could promote Thailand as the hub of flooding. "Come and see our wonderful floods in Phuket right now! Can't come now? Not a problem come in October and see even better floods in Samui - plus you'll get to experience first-hand what it's like to have no electricity for a week"!! "and don't forget, we've been talking about clean toilets too! How can you say no"??

These are just sound-bites, designed to impress people who don't know any better and who don't have memories longer than 9 days. They're targeted at the proletariat, whom they assume are stupid, and people in a position to give them patronage, whom they assume will be impressed. It's really quite sad.

Just 9-day wonders, for the life of me, I can't imagine why people don't recognise what they're doing and just ignore them.

How on earth did they come up with this figure of 2.3 trillion? They state that this year is 592 million. They will have to double that, then double it again. How on earth do they think that's possible? There is very little money in Europe or Australia right now. I'm not sure about the US, but I know people in UK and Aus who are taking cheaper holidays closer to home out of necessity rather than choice, and it's quite well known that most Chinese tourists are zero dollar tourists as everything is planned, booked and paid for, so they won't be generating any significant spending.

The biggest facepalm is that someone is being paid to come up with the nonsense. TAT are well known for making ridiculous claims, but this has got to be their finest effort.

An even bigger facepalm - taking the 592 million baht and doubling it then doubling it again would only make 2.4 billion, not trillion. It really isn't possible.

While the numbers are likely to be bogus, the percentages might not be. Americans seem to be almost completely gone and like they mentioned, the Russian invasion has retreated. Anybody remember what the European percentage used to be? Just by looking around I think it has gone down from 40% to 25. Replaced by tour buses carrying the Chinese standing still in traffic jams.

Definitely NOT in this lifetime...

I personally think it's more likely to hit a all time low due to all the shit going on here and the crappy attitude Thais have towards tourists these days.

This is a beautiful country and can become THE TOURIST attraction again if they sort out their house.

I wonder how many trillions are generated by resident ex-pats who live here semi-permanently? It makes more economic sense to encourage these spenders rather than the Chinese who have pre-paid for everything in their own country except a daily coke.
