On My Way To The Mai Soon ... Questions On Finding A Place

Recommended Posts

I'm coming to the Mai!

And I have no idea about how to get started there. :D

I was wondering how I might go about finding a place there?

I don't really need to stay in town. The main thing's I'll be looking for are:

1. Good Internet connection already set up (this is the most important thing really)

2. Walking distance to some cheap thai food (hopefully green curry =P )

3. Walking distance to a commercial gym would be ideal (but not necessary I guess - I can stay unfit :o )

4. Basic safety would be nice too

Any tips on how I would go about finding a place, as well as approx price for a furnished flat would be a great help.

Cheers,

HH

I don't really need to stay in town. The main thing's I'll be looking for are:

1. Good Internet connection already set up (this is the most important thing really) is for everybody :D if here for 6/12 months and renting a flat/house - internet is not a problem slower speeds than Europe/US but gnerally pretty good, although has a habit of cutting out and restarting - anywhere from 600-1000 Baht a month for 560K-1MB expect to get speed of 30% less than that (speed wise),which shouldnt be an issue unless you like to download tons of music/videos etc..

2. Walking distance to some cheap thai food (hopefully green curry =P )

Whether street vendors, food halls (some good some bad trial and experiment) and restaurants where ever you are plenty of food available, just got to find the places you like. Personally I find it hard to buy "really bad" food here - tends to be one place is better than the next but all trial and error

3. Walking distance to a commercial gym would be ideal (but not necessary I guess - I can stay unfit :D )

Plenty of good gyms around, and there is a thread dedicated somewhere to that among the last 20 topics

4. Basic safety would be nice too

Not sure where your coming from but CNX is safer than where most of us westerners come from, of course you have to use your head, but safest place I have been in a long time, moving to a new country can be intimating and coming from the West yes it is different at first but Thais are very nice and helpful and friendly. I would have never considered moving into a Thai neighbourhood when I first ever arrived but have done so since

Where to live and what to spend on a place is really is like asking how long is a piece of string, you could live by neiman hamen (which is right by the universities) be a short distance from town, active nightlife, lots of choice of food, gyms etc... if you want to live on your own and have your own place a budget from 4,000 - 10,000 and you can get good clean living, the more you pay the more space and better equipped if you want to be more central

For that sort of money its more apts/condos if here for a while you could get a house for the same money being a bit more out (being farther out in CNX is alot more differnt than being further out in most places, just a few KM), but still well connected for transport.

Finding a property that you like doesnt take that long but worth looking around, getting food is most definietly not a prob.

With your first question "looking for a place" there are many threads on this board, about people looking for agents, flats etc...

In my experience stay somewhere for 10 days, guesthouse/hotel and look around a bit. CM is not a major city so easy to get around and build up an idea of whats it like, but this way you can do some exploring and see what you think you will like

Lots of info on this forum, and ask anyone that you meet along your travels who says they live here there opinions, between it all you wont have a problem and gather lots of useful info

Where is The Mai? Are you referring to Chiang Mai?

If so, everything you are asking has been answered in numerous topics in this forum many many times. Do a little searching and you'll find the answers you're looking for.

There really is lots of choice, within a week or 2 you can find somewhere, finding a place is not that big a issue but just depends what your after or what your expecting, and what you want to spend

Not being intenionally vague, but if you said what your budget is expectations for area etc.. I think you will get lots of free advice as there is a lot of knowl on this forum, more specific you can be you will get more suggestions from lots of people.

You can't have looked to far. These are in the 1st 4 pages. And they're all in English.

And oddly enough there is plenty of cheap Thai food in Thailand. Walk in any direction for 50 metres or so and you'll probably find some.

He's dead alright, he was black but he shouldn't have bitten the gardener. Tasted bloody great though, nothing like Isaan style BBQ'd dog.

What does civil mean? Grumpy.....nah mate, old.....nope but middle aged, git.....well maybe but I get a big grin when I see some of the responses to my posts. Yours even bought a giggle or 2.
