Checkpoints block Northeast travel

SURIN: -- Surin provincial police have set up checkpoints on eight roads heading towards Bangkok after reports that groups might travel to the capital to support counter-coup groups, according to a report on Radio Thaliand.

According to the official radio, these groups may comprise people who oppose the takeover by the Council of Democratic Reform under the Constitutional Monarchy (CDRM).

Residents have been urged to cooperate and provincial police have apologised for the inconvenience.

The provincial police chief, Pol Maj-Gen Boonlert Jaipradit, said the checkpoints were necessary to prevent disorder, according to the radio.

Checkpoints were set up on roads leading out of the province to Buri Ram and to Nakhon Ratchasima. The checkpoints would stop people trying to join rallies, either pro- or anti-CDRM, the report said.

Police Major General Boonlert told Radio Thailand the checkpoints would stay up until Saturday, and apologised for the inconvenience to most motorists. He urged people to help authorities by staying alert and preventing disorder. He asked people to provide information to the authorities.
