My multi-entry non-imm 'O' class visa will expire on Sept. 30, 2006.

The 'admitted until date' stamp in my PP is Dec. 18, 2006.

Am I legal to stay until Dec. 18? Or will I be in 'overstay of visa' mode after Sept. 30?

The date you need to take notice of is the "admitted until date".

When the visa expires it simply means that you can no longer use it to enter Thailand.

Thanks Totster.

So technically no one ever 'overstays' their visa. They 'overstay' their 'admitted until date' stamp.

I think 90% of people dont know the difference between a "visa" and a "permit".

A visa is a document/stamp that gives you the right to travel to a nation. Visas have validity period stating the dates between which the Visa can be utilized.

A permit is a document/stamp that gives you the right to stay in a nation.Permits have validity periods stating when the permit expires.

Case Study 1

You have a Non Immigrant O visa that allows you to travel to Thailand.Upon entry you are given a permit(the stamp) that allows you to stay 90 days.

Case Study 2

You dont need a visa to travel to Thailand (Visa Waiver).Upon entry you are given a permit(the stamp) to stay for 30 days.

kiakaha - thanks for the explanation. I *thought* things worked that way but just wanted to verify. After getting turned down for my retirement visa I'm not taking any chances with a 'misunderstanding'.

7. Please note that the period of visa validity is different from the period of stay. The visa validity is a period during which a visa can be used to enter Thailand. Generally, the validity of a visa is 3 months, but in some cases, we also issue visas valid for 6 months or 1 year. The validity of a visa is granted by the Embassy or Consulate-General and shown in the visa. The period of stay depends on the type of visa and is granted by an immigration officer upon arrival at the port of entry. For example, the period of stay for a transit visa does not exceed 30 days, for a tourist visa does not exceed 60 days and for a non-immigrant visa does not exceed 90 days from the arrival date. Travellers who wish to stay longer than such period may apply for extension of stay at offices of the Immigration Bureau in Bangkok, located in Soi Suan Plu, South Sathorn Road, Bangkok 10120, Tel 02-2873101-10 or at an Immigration office in the provinces. For information on application for extension of stay, please see the website of the Immigration Bureau at www.immigration.go.th
