New born half-thai flying aboard with US passport

Featured Replies

I have a newborn and we are going to fly to the US in a few months to see family, however we have only gotten a US passport for my son, who is half thai/american. Is this going to be a problem when we fly back to thailand, if he doesn't already have a thai passport? Can we get one when we come back? What would happen when his 30 day stamp on the US passport expire? Do they actually match the exits/entries. As long as we have thai passport for next trip?

I you are going to fly in a few months, get a Thai passport now, it doesn't take long. why complicate things.

You should get a Thai passport for you child before making the trip. It only takes about a week to get and it is only one trip to the passport office because they EMS the passport to you.

Getting the passport later would create problems for a later trip since they would not have a departure stamp in their Thai passport because they would have yodepart the country on their US passport.

I your child enter on the US passport they would get a 30 day entry which means you would need a get a one year extension at immigration for them as a returning Thai national.

Info on getting the Thai passport is here. http://www.mfa.go.th/main/en/services/1415/21479-Requirements-for-the-Ordinary-e-Passports-Applicat.html

There are passport offices in all regions of the country. List of offices is here in Thai. http://www.consular.go.th/main/th/organize/21037-%E0%B8%AB%E0%B8%99%E0%B9%88%E0%B8%A7%E0%B8%A2%E0%B8%9A%E0%B8%A3%E0%B8%B4%E0%B8%81%E0%B8%B2%E0%B8%A3%E0%B8%AB%E0%B8%99%E0%B8%B1%E0%B8%87%E0%B8%AA%E0%B8%B7%E0%B8%AD%E0%B9%80%E0%B8%94%E0%B8%B4%E0%B8%99%E0%B8%97%E0%B8%B2%E0%B8%87.html

If the baby uses his newly-issued US passport to leave for US, does he need to get an endorsement from the local Thai immigration office before he flies as his information never exists in their system?

Believe your question is return to Thailand and use of Thai passport for first time (not having a departure card)? The passport is valid proof of right to enter and happens often (many children are born overseas and first entry is with Thai passport) so should not be an issue and easy explained if questioned.

Edit: sorry - misread as "the US" rather than "for US".

You would show the child's birth certificate on departure from the country to prove they were born here since their would be no entry stamp in the passport.

Get the Thai passport before you go. If in bangkok it is a 3 day turn around.

if the child returns on a U.S. passport, he will be subject to immigration rules.

It's nearly forty years ago but, when I had to depart Thailand with our 13 month old son (born in Thailand), he had a new UK PP with no visa stamps and I had to get an Emergency Certificate from the Thai MFA to show on departure. Thai birth certificate then was not acceptable as a departure document. Is it now?

It is now standard procedure now to show a birth certificate on departure.

The Thai passports is one of the easiest and most efficient things you'll apply for..anywhere in the world.

It would be much more easier than having the schlep down to immigration for the annual extension, not to mention 90 day reporting.
