New 1,000 baht notes to be available for exchange on August 21

BANGKOK: -- New 1,000 baht banknotes which are harder for counterfeiting will be available for exchange at all state-owned and commercial banks as of August 21.

Bank of Thailand governor Prasarn Trairatworakul said Monday that the new 1,000 baht banknotes, the 16th model, were issued to commemorate the late King Rama V the Great. The designs on the banknote tell a story of the important activities of the Great King and new printing technology was used in the printing of the banknotes which will make counterfeiting difficult, he added.

The new banknote’s size is 72 mm x 162 mm and is in brown colour. The water marks of the portrait of His Majesty the King and the figures 1000 are specially transparent and can be seen clearly from both sides of the note when exposed to light.

August 21 was chosen as the date for the exchange and distribution of the new 1,000 baht banknotes because it was the day when the late King Rama V announced the scrapping of slavery in Siam.

Over 100 million notes are available for exchange during the first 3-4 months after which more notes will be printed.

The new 1,000 baht banknotes are expected to replace all the old banknotes of similar denomination in two years.

Not surprising since they aren't supposed to be circulated until the 21st.

They should have 5,000 Baht notes.

I sympathize with all the people both Thai and farang who find the fact that the largest denomination is only a B1000 note. However in vast swaths of this country the average Somchai and Noi in shops and markets deals in B100s and B20s. Many look enviously at a B1000 note, something which may be in their possession, but not for long.

But reality suggests that a B2000 or B5000 would be useful to some.

Hoarding cash would be so much more convenient with the big notes, especially if you need a pickup truck to move it.

However those engaging in horizontal maneuvers with pooyings on a pay for play basis may find it embarrassing to ask for change from a fiver.

I was actually wandering when they will make 5000 thb bank note

coffee1.gif They need B10,000 notes as the girls are simply not interested in the 1,000. Actually, how about a million note?cheesy.gif

Perhaps someone needs to have a quiet word with you and explain the system?rolleyes.gif

Oh, of course, you were being mildly sarcastic.

Who cares a banknote is a banknote,,, All the bank notes from the same value should be same,,, to confusing and more counterfeit problems,,,,Wake up, looking for more trouble,,,,

They are the same except for the fact that recently the BOT has issued new notes to reflect His Majesty's ageing and newer look.

They vary in size to aid the "vision" impaired (if that's the correct term this week.)

Does anybody have more info on what is on the other side of the note? The BOT press release only says that the new design is to glorify His Majesty King Chulalongkorn for his incomparable contributions to the country.

In the picture Prasarn has two frames banknotes, one showing front, one showing back rolleyes.gif
