First bicycle road in the northeast under construction in Korat



KORAT: -- The first bicycle road for the Northeast is under construction in Muang district of Nakhon Ratchasima by the provincial rural highways office.

The four-lane bicycle road is 4.4 metre wide and 10 kilometres long from Po Klang police station in Muang district to the provincial zoo. Construction cost was estimated at 30 million baht.

The project, the first of its kind in the Northeast, is an extension of the “Bike for Mom” cycling ride on August 16 to commemorate Her Majesty the Queen’s birthday on August 12.

Mr Pongsak Phisitvanich, president of the Muang Ya off-road cycling club, said that bikers in the province were very delighted with the bike road. He said that bikers usually ride on the shoulders of highways in group of about 30-40 bikers each which is unsafe from reckless drivers.

The new bike road, he pointed out, will encourage more people in the province to turn to cycling for health reason and for recreation.
