Pridiyathorn says he will not accept an advisory post because he dislikes “divide and rule” system

BANGKOK: -- Outgoing Deputy Prime Minister M.R. Pridiyathorn Devakula told the media before the official announcement of the new cabinet that he would not accept any advisory post offered by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha because he did not agree with the “divide and rule” style in economic management.

He said that if the prime minister believed that Mr Somkid Jatusripitak, advisor to the National Council for Peace and Order, was suitable to be deputy prime minister in charge of economic affairs then the latter should be allowed a free hand to handle economics and there was no need for an economic advisor.

The embattled deputy prime minister said he had no grudges against Mr Somkid and if he found out there was anything not right he could directly talk to Mr Somkid. He insisted that the new economic team to be headed by Mr Somkid should warrant support and there should not be any “divide and rule” system.

M.R, Pridiyathorn also told reporters he had not been approached by Mr Amphon Kitti-amphon, secretary-general of the cabinet, reported to be assigned to see him with an offer from the prime minister.

And even if he was approached with the offer, he said he would not accept it any way.

Asked about the “divide and rule” system, he said he thought he had been watched all along to find fault with them and this was discouraging. He added he he didn’t want this to happen to Mr Somkid.

Asked to elaborate the “divide and rule”, the outgoing deputy prime minister shot back at the reporters saying: “How about you are working and then there is an advisor who keeps monitoring you. What does that mean? It means you are either right or wong. If Mr Somkid is to take care of economic affairs, then there should not be an advisor to monitor him.”

Asked if he feel hurt for being removed from the cabinet, he said he wasn’t hurt became he joined the cabinet in order to work and did the best he could.

Another person who wants it done as per his suggestion or I will take my marbles and go home. Let him kick rocks and think about the old time proven addage. '' two brains are better than one'' if they cooperate.

The PM may be somewhat impatient to see more substantial results in the economy, Military men are not noted for setting back and being patient but lean more to '' lets get this show on the road'' Thats why they have staff who cooperate with one another and report to the top man as individuals and as a group/

I never heard this called divide and rule, by those who want to and are capable of making a real contribution to solve problem and get the train back on track.Thailand has shown to have both of the latter.

This fellow seems too full of himself and does not want to be a team player. The mark of a good manager is ti identify this type and give them a nudge that gets results he is seeking.

maybe you give the "PM" too much credit?

For example,

Military men are not noted for setting back and being patient but lean more to '' lets get this show on the road''

I don't see any show getting on the road for the last 15 months - trial balloons for the new constitution were floated this weekend, no elections in site, claims that the new cabinet will have to "start working on reforms" 15 months after the "intervention".

Looks to me like a 15 month holding pattern...

Well, except for the political purge and the spiking LM cases - that's more like a bullet train...

If he is being removed, presumably for under performing, why on earth would he be offered an 'advisory' post?

let's be honest, how could be possibly know the reasons for the changes. There is no transparency, so everyone is guessing...

Well coups are probably never particularly good for an economy, so short of him being removed purely on public sentiment which is not impossible, it must be seen that he has failed to deliver, although in the current global climate it obviously cannot all be put down to his performance.

Surely "advisory post" is further up the pay scale and bureauspeak for " inactive post".

A polite way of saying "take five"

Possibly, but lets hope its not a paid position. At this rate every man and his dog will be on the pay roll.

I believe that the NLA, CDC, and NRC were found to be hiring family and friends as 'advisors' and 'special assistants'...

Surely the family dog could be viewed as a "support system" for such hard working individuals...

That's hilarious ! You have a natural talent for writing comedy ! cheesy.gif

But seriously, your comment reminded me of a former PM who used everyone except the family dog, including maid and driver, relatives etc. when the need arose. clap2.gif

It is to be expected that he would show Prayut some colour by refusing the consolation prize. He also spat the dummy and resigned as finance minister when Somkid was brought into the Sarayud cabinet. He wasn't listened to much as deputy PM and certainly wouldn't be consulted as an advisor. What is more to the question is why Prayut agreed to have him in the cabinet in the first place, when he already had an appalling track record from the Sarayud government or left him festering in the job for so long. 60 million Thais have already suffered from this St Gabriel's old boys' network decision and every minute's delay in removing him has cost them more money. The same applies to Sommai who has just been dinged as finance minister. He was Pridyathorn's uninspiring deputy finance minister in the Sarayud government and was taken out of mothballs for another spin in the Prayud government in the full knowledge of what the result was likely to be.
