Tesco Lotus will never ever make any money with their Shoponline, at least in the Chiang Mai area.

They frequently send me E mails stating that if I spend 2500 Baht I can get a 250 Baht discount, or maybe 3K Baht and a 300 Baht discount - on average 10%.

What frequently happens though is that you clock up an order for say 2500 or 3K Baht, which then gives me FREE delivery, as opposed to driving to their store (costing me over 200 Baht in Diesel) Apply the coupon for the discount and they turn up in their freezer, fridge trucks with your order and half of it is not available. BUT! They still apply the discount! (more than half of the beers were out of stock - almost 1000 baht there alone, no celery, tinned tomatoes.....

Today I ordered some beers and bits and pieces, the order was for about 3050 Baht, discounted by 300 Baht and the 60 Baht delivery fee was waived.

They turned up with half the beers as they ran out, 30% of the vegetables were also unavailable so the final bill was 2050 Baht!

So I got 300 Baht free discount on a 2200 Baht order, free 60 Baht delivery for what would cost me more than 200 Baht to collect, two bags of rice they were going to deliver had insects in them so they replaced them with a higher grade.

All in all I worked it out that I saved over 700 Baht by ordering online as opposed to what I could buy locally. it is well over 25% discount.

Thank you Tesco, but your business model is seriously flawed if you think that Thais can control this sort of system, the Mai Bpen Rai attitude will never work at this level.

I can't see the flaw....they want market share.

Look what Amazon is doing, they must be even more stupid than Tesco.....

So why are they stupid to give you a discount that you do not deserve ?

Thank you for the tip, I will try to order unavailable items too !

And sure cheaper than bring everything back because 1 farang complain that he got 20 Baht too less discount.

I will not use them again until they establish a fill or kill system

I am tired of someone in the warehouse "picking" deciding what an appropriate substitute is for something I ordered

It does me no good to have half of my order changed to things and brands that I don't want. Forces me to go to my local Tesco and find what I need, not what some clerk has decided I need, so now I am inconvenience twice, once waiting for my home delivery order and then a visit to the store to get what I really want and need

I used to be a big Tesco Online shopper when they first started their service. But over time and with experience, I've really started leaning more on Tops Online.

Here's the big difference IME that's soured me on Tesco.

1. With Tesco, they may often be out of stock of items that still show as available on their ordering website. And, depending on the store handling the order, they'll simply bring whatever remains of your order without telling you in advance what's not coming or giving you any chance to yourself choose substitutes for those items.

2. With Tops, if the store handling the order doesn't have anything that you've ordered, they'll call you on the telephone in advance of the delivery and tell you what they won't have. And, you'll get the chance at that point over the phone to substitute items or add different items to your original online order.

Last time Tesco showed up with half of my order missing, including most of the things I really wanted, I called and told their customer hotline that if they kept doing like that, I'd cease doing business with them. And I asked them, if Tops can call in advance re missing items, why can't Tesco? Of course no answer to that forthcoming.

But, nowadays, I always look to order first with Tops, which usually has free delivery for any orders over 888 baht at present. And only if I really can't get something from Tops, I'll eventually get around to doing a smaller Tesco order.

At the beginning, Tesco used to have a lot of free delivery promotions, even for smaller orders. But these days, those free delivery offers usually are only for 2K to 3K in total value orders, and our household usually isn't ordering that much from them in any given order. And of course, the value of our Tesco orders is getting smaller and smaller as long as they continue with their stupidity.

Totally agree, nothing worse than getting half the order, even if it does work out cheaper. (I just had an E mail back tonight from Trevor Masters, CEO of Tesco wanting to address this problem, I pasted your comments just to show I wasn't a whining ass!)

Everything you point out is exactly what I said to them 6 months ago, he is as stumped as us! Guess you can put it down to "Thainess"

I don't know all the ins and outs of corporate stuff relating to Tesco.

But as far as I can tell, the Thailand Tesco operation is run by Thai management and seems to operate in the same normally inefficient, routinely nonsensical manner that a lot of Thai businesses do. If there's any presence of UK management style here with Tesco Thailand, I'm certainly not seeing it.

BTW, I guess I should eventually get around to asking them why I, as a 100% Bangkok resident with a Bangkok delivery address since Day 1, suddenly seem to have the Tesco facility in Chiang Mai, hundreds of kilometers away, as my order "pick-up" option in their Tesco Online ordering system. Perhaps that's their way of telling me they really don't want customers picking up their own orders! whistling.gif

Think the OP -doesn't see a good thing when it's right in front of him.

firstly he does OK out of it and secondly Tesco get a reputation for trying to do the right thing in customer service - what a refres=hing change. I bet there are now a few more people willing to try there internet services......it's not just about making a few bob on EVERY single deal, it's about building up clientelle and market share.

Perhaps you should look into "loss leaders" whilst you're at it?

You really have no idea do you?

The entire point was about getting a "Fair Deal" not skimming a few Baht from Tesco.

At the end of the day they provide a great service, it is good to get your bits delivered to your home, for which I am well willing to pay the 60 Baht.

What some people here cannot seem to get their heads around that is if Tesco keep bungling things up and cutting half of an order or keep losing money, how long do you think "Home Delivery" Will last?

They are not stupid, when they come to balance the books they will realize it has all gone south and it will be pulled as a service, then we can all smile an be happy with the rubbish service, lazy assed assistants at the shops like Big C which are a disgrace.

I for one would prefer to pay a fair price and the 60 Baht charge for delivery that Tesco provides rather than spend 300 Baht in fuel to drive to the asylum of retards at my local Big C, where the staff are more interested in messaging on their bloody handphones than actually doing any work.

Thailand left to Thailand = Chaos, either they decide to make a go of competing in an international community or just give up and end up with their yellow shirt / blue shirt / red shirt/ Poll Pot mentality. You cant have it both ways.
