Eco stickers required of new cars starting October 1

BANGKOK, 3 September 2015 (NNT) – Car manufacturers and exporters will have to put standardized labels known as 'ECO Stickers' on new cars at points of sale or display, starting in October.

According to Office of Industrial Economics director Udom Wongwiwatchai, the labels, which will provide details of each car's performance parameters based on the globally-accepted standard, will benefit consumers making the decision which car they should buy.

The ECO stickers will also improve the state sector's efficiency in enforcing automobile standards and in collecting tax under the new excise structure due to take effect in January.

From October 1 onward, manufacturers and importers will need to place the stickers on the windshield or the window of each new car before the cars are sent to distributors, sites of display and sites of sale, Mr. Udom said.

After October 1, new cars purchased without an ECO sticker will no longer be entitled to the new excise tax structure. According to Mr. Udom, there are 416 car models in the market that will need the ECO stickers. Manufacturers and importers can look up the details involved with registering ECO stickers at www.car.go.th.

Its not really the new cars need stickers but the old smoky cars, trucks, buses needs to be encouraged to replace or at least improve them with better exhaust filters as soon as possible...

Exactly, especially the BKK citybuses.

It would also help a lot if the Thai in BKK started driving small citycars like the rest of the world. Maybe they also can park those without help but i doubt that.

I guess another sticker on the wind screen won't hurt. That along with the tinting, dingle dangles hanging off the mirror and other crap on the dash is no where near as distracting as toy keys glued to the back of some girls cars. Oh BTW they're worth a 2000 Baht fine.

Ya gotta wonder!

Mileage consumption does not only depend on the model of vehicle - a lot has to do with how it is driven, whether its boot is full of accumulated deadweight etc

I think the stickers will have emissions levels rather than fuel consumption. Emissions affect the tax rating. Higher emissions = higher tax.

What is a 2000 b fine ?

Stabbing a innocent person when you try to rob them is only a 500b fine.

It's not simply the mileage consumption, it is also emissions, which occur even when a vehicle is motionless.

Tax on emissions, as in Europe, is an incentive to maintain the engine properly, something that many That's don't seem to do. My g/f father runs a pickup that wouldn't be allowed on the road in the UK, not only is it inefficient, it's downright bloody dangerous (and so is his driving. ).

collecting "tax" under the new excise structure due to take effect in January.

There's your sign...TAX!

Climate change is the new boogie man and will cost businesses and citizens...while scientists argue if human beings have any significant affect on the world's climate...

Before long...the US will not only pretend it is interested in "human trafficking" but will also be putting pressure on trading partners to include climate change legislation to collect tax money to waste on pet projects...IMHO

If they follow the impressive household appliances labeling stickers example, the good news is that they can save in printing costs: we will see only the "dee maak maak" 5 stars label.

Totally useless but.. everybody's happy. And that's the point, right?

New cars are not the problem with the bad air quality in Thailand. It is because of the older no muffler trucks and cars that are raising Thailand,s cancer rate every year. Scooter driver and all Thais know where the problem lies. That is why so many wise scooter driver wear dust masks. No secret but government still can not believe they have bad air or just do not care!

USA does nothing to stop climate change so how can they enforce it on others?

You must be on drugs or a official for air quality in Thailand. Every car gets inspected by a air quality machine every year. If it does not pass they have a chance to make repairs to make there cars pass inspection. If it still does not pass they do not issue a air quality sticker so there car can not be driven due to the bad air it produces. Also in the USA no burning of fields or any other form of pollution. This rule also goes for all big industries in the USA. They also have strict rules on water pollution for every house and factory in the USA. It is not the USA who is enforcing it on Thailand it is the World . Once the ozone is gone the hole world is affected.
