Thai students win US Embassy animators contest on Asean unity
THE NATION

BANGKOK: -- THE US Embassy Bangkok has announced the winners of the young animators contest "Asean: Ten Nations, One Community," hosted by the embassy in collaboration with Sripatum University's School of Digital Media.

The contest was open to high school and equivalent students nationwide in promoting a creativity platform for youth and supporting Thailand's digital industries and highlighting the US commitment to Asean integration.

Animation entitled "House of Asean" by Witthawat Suknuntee, Wayu Srinites and Chanathop Donmon - three graphic design students from Pongsawadi Technological College's Digital Media Department - was announced the winner.

Some 50 contestants submitted entries from Bangkok and the provinces. The first runners-up award went to Satriwittaya School, the second runner-up to Janokrong School from Phitsanulok, and the two complimentary awards went to another team from Janokrong and from Suksanaree School.

The total value of prizes for the contest winners was over Bt200,000, and included iPad products, which the organisers hope would help enhance the winners' creative skills.

US animation art envoy Jason Pichon, a leading young animation artist with previous work experience with Walt Disney Feature Animation and renowned game company EA/Tiburon, came to Thailand to conduct a series of workshops for Thai students. He joined the panel of judges where 14 finalist teams presented their work this week at Sripatum University.

The US animation envoy expressed his impression of young Thais and their enthusiasm and ambition as a significant drive for the future of Thai animation and creative industries. Pichon said he believed animation could be a powerful and entertaining tool in bringing people together with a wide range of purposes.

US embassy public diplomacy associate Thomas White said the US always looked for areas of collaboration with Thailand and Asean. Recognising Thailand's efforts to become a creative hub of the region, the embassy had brought five US animation arts envoys to share their expertise and inspire young Thais for five consecutive years.

The first-ever contest under this Thai-US creative partnership aimed not only to achieve a creative platform, but also to encourage Thai students to start to think about their neighbours, and to think of Asean as part of a community as the community's integration approaches this year-end.

The winner's "House of Asean" features a house-building team where all members work together through challenges, difficulties and any circumstances.

The US embassy will have the winners develop their work and by this year-end present the animation to the Foreign Affairs Ministry and Asean diplomatic missions in Thailand as a token of the US commitment to Asean integration.
