No tourist visas unless you are Japanese or a legal resident of Japan. Shown on Tokyo embassy website and confirmed by reports on this forum.

I just found this on the Japanese website...

Before you apply for visa at the Royal Thai Embassy, Tokyo, please be informed that: Tourist Visa
  • the Embassy may require additional documents and reserves the right to reject incomplete visa application.
  • the issuance of visa is under the discretion of the Embassy. The Embassy refuses to explain reason for visa rejection.
  • non-Japanese applicant holding passports of Afghanistan, Algeria, Bangladesh, China, Egypt, India, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Nigeria, Nepal, North Korea, Pakistan, Palestinian State, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria and Yemen cannot apply for any category of visa at the Royal Thai Embassy in Tokyo, unless the applicant acquires permanent resident / mid-to long-term / specific visa to legally reside in Japan.
  • foreigners residing in Japan on specific visa such as permanent resident, long term resident, spouse or child of Japanese citizen, or student, are required to submit additional documents for each category of visa. Please click visa category below for further information.
  • the applicant is strongly advised to apply for visa ahead of time of departure.
  • visa issuance process generally takes one (1) day and the applicant may collect visa on the next working day, unless the applicant is informed by the Embassy of the specific date for visa collection.
  • the embassy may require an interview, please plan your trip with sufficient time for visa processing.
  • fraud or misrepresentation can result in permanent visa ineligibility.
  • visa fee is non-refundable.
  • all documents required, except company’s registration issued by the Ministry of Commerce of Thailand and certificate of marriage, must be issued within three(3) months on the date of visa application.

my country is not on the list of countries that cannot apply for any type of visa at the thai embassy in Tokyo

I will contact the Tokyo embassy directly and see what they say

but if other people have tried and failed then I will have to alter my plans...

From the Japanese Royal Thai Embassy relating specifically to Tourist Visa applications.

"4. For non-Japanese applicant, a copy of resident card or certificate of alien registration. The applicant is also required to present the original documents of identification upon visa application."

As a long term resident of Japan and a frequent visitor to the Thai embassy here for visas I asked about this subject a couple of months ago when I got my last visa and was told that while there was no absolute ban it would be very unlikely that if you did not have the required documents (and nobody who is not Japanese or living here with a resident card has them) that they would accept a visa application.

My advice is don't have Japan as your only source for a visa, you probably won't get one, but if you are going on to another country with a Thai embassy then you can try, who knows you might get lucky

From this page for tourist visas on embassy website. http://www.thaiembassy.jp/rte2/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=607%3Atourist-visa&catid=51%3Avisa&Itemid=61

You will also need a guarantor who is

"A guarantor must be twenty (20) years of age or older, legally residing in Japan, must be able to confirm aspects of applicants personal attributes such as name, age, physical description and some personal information and must be available to be contacted by the Embassy."

I can confirm this to be the case for me. I was at the Osaka consulate a few months ago I was told I could not apply for any type of visa without a Japanese resident card. Apparently they aren't difficult to get but I believe you have to have a Japanese visa allowing a stay for more than 90 days to get one. I guess in your case it depends on how long you intend to stay in Japan.

thanks for your input, I'm staying maybe one month max

I think I will skip trying to get a visa in Japan and get one elsewhere

Hello,

If it's not your option to fly to Thailand from Japan to get a visa-exempt stamp upon

arrival in the kingdom, you can fly Air Asia to Penang from Tokyo or Osaka via Kuala

Lumpur to apply for a TV at the Thai Consulate.

Good luck.
