BANGKOK: -- The authorities recorded the New Democracy Movement's anti-junta protest march from Thammasat University to Democracy Monument on Saturday and police are considering laying charges, Army Chief General Udomdej Sitabutr said yesterday.

Udomdej said he understood the activists desire to express their opinions on such an important and symbolic day - the ninth anniversary of the September 19, 2006 coup.

However he asked them not to do it again, adding that the Public Assembly Act had been enacted and if it had been violated the demonstration leaders must be held responsible.

Prior to the march, the NDM held a discussion at Thammasat University entitled "Nine Years - Failure to Move On After September 19 Coup".

Udomdej said the National Council for Peace and Order allowed people some self-expression but it tried to be careful to maintain peace and order.

A key NDM member, Rangsiman Rome, responded to Udomdej's remark that the activists had never accepted the NCPO and its laws, so he was unconcerned about being charged.

He said the group's members were prepared to accept any outcome their actions might prompt.

As was in the '76 massacre protest and the 2 universities battling it out, I can only say, with sadness, that this will happen again. Thais forget their history 5 minutes after.

Thammasat University seems to be the fraternal home of a lot of troublemakers and dissenters, and has been for decades. The army should have leveled the place with tanks and artillery back in the seventies. It's not to late to reconsider!

No, but they certainly want to blot that event out. It puts the elite in a very bad light. Come to think of it I don't see them ever celebrating any but events so old that nobody could be offended by them. Do they have a holiday for the 1932 uprising? I know they do have a holiday celebrating the constitution, but it's never stated which one they mean, so everybody can join in on that one.
