Can anyone tell me the Thai name for DOU MIAO?

There are known as pea shoots, pea tips, pea vines or snow pea shoots in English.

Are they eaten in Thailand?

Thank you for your help.

I don't believe that pea shoots/vines/tips are commonly eaten in Thailand. Neither my wife nor I have seen them locally. Of course, the (snow) pea pods are often used in Thai cooking and garden (English) peas are becoming more common as well. Other vines and leaves such as squash and pumpkin are eaten though. I'm not familiar with the term DOU MIAO. I think ยอดถั่วลันเตา (yawt tuaa lan dtao) would normally be used to describe the vines or shoots of snow peas.

Perhaps someone else is familiar with DOU MIAO and can give a better Thai name.

Dear Pla shado,

Thank you very much for that information. I think that name is fine.

I was also contacted by private mail from a forum member who gave me the following information:

"I believe it is " โต้วเหมี่ยว ". See http://pantip.com/topic/32700263 or http://www.baanraiplaifun.com/2014/12/peas-seeds.html"

If you ever see these shoots in Thailand, give them a try. They are often used in Chinese cooking and have a crunchy texture, which is unusual for shoots.

Yes, I like pea shoots and have eaten them in the States. I lived and worked in Hong Kong for a while and although I don't recall exactly, I'm pretty sure I had them there as well. Here in Isaan, cool weather crops like peas are mostly imported from other growing areas. I suspect that some of the bigger supermarkets here may carry pea shoots but we've never seen them in the local markets (dta laat soht). We will look for them as my wife likes to eat all sorts of shoots and young vines.

Thanks for the info, I showed the Thai script to my wife and although she isn't familiar with โต้วเหมี่ยว she now wants to try them.
