Ubon Ratchathani Hospital

All of the Ubon hospital threads I can find are already archived so here is another. I thought I'd share a report of a visit to the new Sappasit International Hospital. I took my son to see a pediatrician for bronchitis. It really wasn't much different from Ubon Rak Hospital other than we were the only patient we ever saw during our 90 minutes we were there and it's cleaner (for now). A similar appointment at Ubon Rak costs 180b + medicine. Sappasit Inter was 300b + medicine. Bumrugrad in Bangkok is 800b + medicine. Over the years whenever we go to Ubon Rak or local clinics and need an antibiotic, they give older meds that aren't the current generation. The antibiotic we received last night was the newest generation available. Of course that comes with a cost but I was happy with this particular doctor's investigation, explanation, and diagnosis. Much better than the usual "oh you sneezed? here's an antibiotic."

See attached map. Sunpasitinter Private Hospital is on Phonpaen Road between Sappasit Road and Pitchitrangsan Road.

If you are coming eastbound along Sappasit Road from the main drag, Chayangkul Road (the yellow north-to-south ish main road on the left in my map), you come the the main buildings of Sunpasithiprasong Hospital, the huge public hospital on your left at the junction with Thepyothi Road (6 storey plus buildings standing ahead to your left as you sit at those traffic lights). Carry along Sappasit for one more block and turn right/south. You will see a large aerial sign for Sunpasitinter Hospital on your right half way down that block.

"Sunpasitinter' is the name this new private hospital uses for its transliteration to English. Google uses "Sunpasithiprasong Hospital" for the main public hospital. A lot of falang call the public hospital Sappasit Hospital but that's a bastardised form I think.

I have used Sunpasitinter three times in the last 3 weeks, including a 3 day in-patient stay. I have a lot to say about it and I will post within the next 48 hours*. It's fine to use as an easy access paid-for doctor's clinic (you will be the only one there - no sitting around like in Ubonrak - and you will get the same lottery as to who the doctor is that sees you unless you have pre-arranged a specialist appointment). I have mixed views mainly about their organisational skills in these early days of its existence, but I will post a factual account, not opinions.

Had a negative experience at Ubon Rak last week. I was consulting with 2 specialist doctors back in the U.S. and both said a CT scan was essential for the situation. They said nearly all doctors wouldn't even think twice given the symptoms and blood test results, but it was like pulling teeth to get Ubonrak to agree to it. Then they wouldn't give me a copy of the results to send to the other doctors. They told me there were "only 4 pictures" even though I knew there were many more. I ended up hopping on the computer myself and taking pictures with my phone while nurses were busy. They monitored temperature while my wife was still on fever reducing drugs and only checked underarm which is inaccurate. They also chose a random antibiotic too early according to the doctors I consulted with. When we left, we waited 3.5 hours to pay the bill. I confirmed it was the hospital and not insurance causing the delay. Wife and kids were exhausted and they refused to let me take them home across town even though I offered to leave my wallet, vehicle, and keys as guarantee that I would return to pay the bill in 30 minutes. They wanted 50,000b cash guarantee. We refused and waited and it cost us 90b in the end. Nursing staff are nice and the new room renovations are great, but the health care in general still isn't near what you'll get at the better hospitals in Bangkok. Just another sub-standard rural hospital with nicer facilities. We normally use Bumrungrad but for this case, appendicitis was suspected so time was important.

Has anyone else used Sappasit International lately?

I am not sure if I have read your post correctly Ubonrthai. You are saying that for the CT scan you paid 90,000 baht (You wrote 90b but I am sure that is not correct). I am also puzzled why you had to wait 3.5 hours for the bill. I was there last week for blood tests and chest and lung X-rays for a new work permit for my new company and it was all done very quickly. They gave me the photos. Last year I had a complete health check up for a new health insurance policy I took out. Blood tests, urine analysis, stool analysis, an electrocardiogram (EKG), an exercise EKG on a treadmill, an echocardiogram (Echo) and a Chest X-Ray. Total cost was 11,500 baht. I received a pile of photos and print-outs. Maybe some days are different in regard to waiting.

If by any chance any of your kids have the misfortune of acquiring bronchial and/or fever problems, and elect to go to UbonRak please steer well clear of the female doctor by the name of "Wichuda", she is a complete fool.

Our regular doctor "Balang" was off for a few days and we were lumbered with Wichuda. After 30 hours of Wichuda's mishandling another younger Doctor recognised the problem and changed the medication. An improvement of sorts until Wichuda turned up the following day, and being miffed that a young whipper-Snapper had changed the medication immediately reverted back to the original. Any healing therefore ceased. My wife went off the scale and we immediately changed the doctor to "Adisak". He walked in, commanded the situation, fully explained everything to us and changed the medication.

After a day of sweating and sleeping, the fever was gone .. a slight raise in the evening, but anyhow we were on our way home the following day having spent 4 instead of two nights in house.

Again guys, please keep your kids clear of Wichuda, she is an anachronism, a septuagenarian battleaxe who should be pruning rose bushes or organising Marmalade competitions.

"Balang" or "Adisak" are the Doctors to request

Read this post about a new hospital, Sunpasitinter Hospital, here in Ubon. As a US Embassy Warden Vol. and Commander of the local American Legion Post, TH01, here in Ubon I felt I should pay a visit to Sunpasitinter and view it for myself, in case I'm asked about it. My wife and I were greeted in the lobby by Khun Pranom, from the information desk. After informing her who I was and the reason for our visit, she graciously gave us a guided tour of the facility. We were shown the rooms that are available to patients. All rooms are private, On the floor we were shown, there was a Super VIP room,THB3900. A two room suite, with a large bed area with seating for guests and a separate room which had a dining table for 4, a microwave and additional seating. The Bathroom/WC was very large. A VIP room, THB2900. Which was a single room, with seating for guests, a large bathroom/WC and a dining table with place for four and a microwave. 6 or 8 deluxe rooms,THB1900. Each deluxe room had seating for guests and a microwave. All rooms have small refrigerators. In the lobby there is the Information/Registration desk,Cashier, Pharmacy, Xray dept, consultation room. The Out Patient Department, OPD is also adjourning the lobby down the hallway to the right as you enter. The Xray department can do everything except MRI's. They contract with UbonRak and Sappsit government hospitals for MRI's. The ICU has 8 open ward beds with curtains and 2 private rooms. ICU is not fully operational as they are awaiting the arrival of more equipment. Parking is plentiful with a 4 story parking garage next to the hospital.

The hospital opened 6 months ago by a well known Plastic Surgeon in Thailand. It is very clean and neat. Staff was plentiful. English is also used on signage throughout the hospital. This is the best I can do at present. Hopefully I will be able to get information on insurances and their ability to file claims with the different insurance companies.

DISCLAIMER: I have no affiliation with Sunpasitinter Hospital. This is strictly my opinion and views and no one else.
