2 or 3 nights in Kanchanaburi?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Hope this hasn't been done to death. We arrive back in BKK for our monthly holiday on Dec 10th. Plan to spend the night in BKK and the next morning go to Kanchanburi. Hoping to get the 07:45am train to Kanchanaburi on the 11th, so arrive at say 11am. Get cheked in etc. be free by noon.

I read it's a 2 hour drive to the waterfalls... but I think i'll suck it up as we probably won't see any other waterfalls this time (We're going to Cambodia, then straight down South to Phi Phi / Kao Tao and then back to BKK for New Years Eve). So, we're leaving it too late to go to the Waterfalls that day. (That will be day 2)

So, when we arrive at noon on the first day, would it be advisable to get a driver (or maybe there's mini busses) to bring us out to Hellfire Pass. I read on a blog (can't find it anymore) that the best thing to do is to get dropped off at the furthest away train station, and get the return train to Kanchanaburi to get to ride the viaduct.

Now, the issue is that, there's a good chance we won't make the 7:45am train from BKK on the first day, meaning that we won't get to Kanchanaburi until that afternoon.

Damn, i've just answered my own question, haven't I? I need 3 nights, don't I?

On that note, can anyone recommend somewhere to stay, for about 1,000 baht a night? We don't mind simple, but would like clean. Happy to either totally chill-out, or stay somewhere with a bit of atmosphere.... we're easy!

OR, would it make sense to take the train right to Nam Tok and arrange a taxi to meet us there, then bring us to Hellfire Pass. From there, they will drive us back to Kanchanaburi (Day / Night 1)

Then, the next day go to the waterfalls (Day / Night 2)

Day 3, return to BKK via train (or bus, whatever more convenient... we just want to experience the train once)

We decided on 3 nights as we are no longer going to Cambodia, so no rush.... case closed :)

FYI...getting a car/taxi from Bangkok to do an all day tour of the area, then drop you off at your hotel in Kan is a cheap and easy way to go. Pick up at your hotel, a full day tour, then drop you off right at your hotel. Something you might want to consider.

Luxury hotel under 1000 opposite the war braves, fantastic 15 years ago

last year was clean and ok for the money, have a good trip.

Thanks for the recommendation, we'll take a look :) Looking forward to our 3 nights. We have made ourselves flexible so we can now stay 4 if we like the place!
