Deadly shooting on college campus in Arizona

One person is dead and three others have been wounded in a college shooting in the US.

An attacker is reported to have opened fire on the Northern Arizona University’s Flagstaff campus early on Friday morning close to a dormitory which houses most of the students involved in Greek organisations.

A university spokesperson said the suspected shooter is being held in custody.

The news comes just a day after the first of a series of public memorial services for those who were killed in the the shooting at a community college in Oregon last week.

Ten people died in the rampage carried out by Chris Harper-Mercer who exchanged gunfire with the police before turning the gun on himself.

The massacre has reignited the national debate over gun control.

President Barack Obama is scheduled to travel to the college in Oregon to meet families of the victims on Friday.

"The massacre has reignited the national debate over gun control."

Sorry to laugh at a tragic time, but this is ridiculous. The debate is reignited? No doubt it is...but it means the last debate only lasted a few days, and the next debate will be reignited AGAIN next week.

Time to stop talking about it and actually do something.

Only one dead on a college campus? That's not news anymore in America. We need multiple gun killings to get the left out with "sensible gun laws" and the right to respond with "guns don't kill people..." Otherwise, it's just business as usual. Actually, even a dozen dead would be business as usual.

Note heavy sarcasm.

The Pro Life party has become the Pro Mass Murder Party. Only one person dead? Who cares.

Another mass murder coming soon to a school near you. More children have been murdered than cops in the last ten years, the Pro Life Party at its finest.

They don't need terrorists in the USA, their own citizen are armed to the teeth and go crazy once in a while. Seems though that it becomes more and more frequent.

Fact, with guns its so much easier to kill people, just look at other countries with tough gun laws. You don't see this crazy stuff. Darwin at work in the US.

Problem is that there are so many guns floating around without impounding all of them and destroying them (almost impossible) there will be no improvement.

They can say they want to solve the problem but stricter gun laws don't help against all the guns already in the hands of criminals and normal people.

Real bad situation to be in with no easy solution.

How many more people have to die in America at the hands of a person armed with a handgun. There is nothing in the US Constitution which guarantees the right of every American to own a handgun. They need to be banned permanently. If a person wants a rifle for sporting purposes- they can purchase this with a background check and then keep it at the local Armory or Gun Club. Even the military doesn't walk around with guns. They are stored in the Armory. The problem is that politicians really don't care how many people die. They are playing up to their rural consistencies and distorting the US Constitution as well as catering to the commercial gun makers and gun lobby.

In addition, there is a lack of focus in the US on how to handle the mentally ill. the government doesn't seem to realize they need to fund provisions for the mentally ill to receive treatment; establish halfway houses for mentally ill homeless and a database so they cannot purchase any type of weapon. Of course, this would mean that the US Congress might actually have to do something, instead of blindly voting for a Defense Bill which will cost the US taxpayer $630 Billion. But this is all OK according to the politicians- The US is the greatest country in the World. As an American, I am ashamed that this is allowed to continue- year after year.

And the republicans will say politicians are grandstanding again because the discussion is trying to be had. When is the right time to have this discussion? One shooting always just happened and the next one is always just days away.

Just do the right thing already. The Gov will never take all your guns away there just has to be some common sense laws in place to restrict accessibility.

The American's "keep fear alive" mentality always prevails.

They can shoot each other by the thousands every year and not blink and eye, yet if 1 Muslim shot someone in an act of terror the reaction would be deafening.

Sad to say that more people have not given you a like on this one. Let me be the first and hopefully not the last. Why is it when people make sense they are ignored? Post something stupid and it gets likes all over the place. Making to much sense of things today seems out of date. Guess that is indicative of the type of world we live in. Guess the Casino (stock market) is closed today. Monday should be interesting. Hopefully over the weekend some of the investor drug taking will wear off and reality will set in. This the market goes up on bad news world is troubling.

The whole mentality on guns in America has to change before anything will be done. I have talked with many Americans who live in fear, as they know how many people who have mental issues, still have guns. Every year there are people killing people accidentally and deliberately, and nothing ever changes. In Canada, with the stricter gun laws, there is still lots of people in the criminal world who have lots of guns of all types, and people here are getting shot as well. I don't have an answer of how the future can be made a more peaceful place, and I know that I feel safer knowing that I can defend myself if need be, even if it is with a shotgun, but I am concerned that the attacks on schools, universities, and other places seem to be increasing.

One thing about the USA though, with all the people armed in that country, it would be pretty hard for some group to think that they can invade America any time soon.
