Who let the crocs out? Security concerns hit Thai farms

By Siraphob Thanthong-Knight, dpa

Samut Prakan, Thailand (dpa) - Two yellow eyes emerge from the green water, along with rows of sharp teeth, and the rest of the two-metre crocodile appears into a rare sunny afternoon at the end of the monsoon season in a city near Bangkok.

He finds a space among the other crocodiles to rest after feasting on fish, his dark skin contrasting with the pale concrete floor of the pit, one of many at Samutprakarn Crocodile Farm and Zoo, the world's largest farming facility for the reptiles.

The young male lives among 60,000 other crocodiles behind double concrete walls, metal fences and steel grates. But not every farm has such escape-proof measures.

"There are no detailed rules on how the pits should be," said Chanin Sangrungrueng of the fisheries department in the central province of Ratchaburi, 100 kilometres west of Bangkok. "The rule only states that the pits should be 'sturdy and strong'."

"The rule only states that the pits should be 'sturdy and strong'."

The keyword here is 'pit'!

And the mouth of a pit would be flush with it's existing ground, or else we do not call it a pit.

Try changing the requirement to an 'enclosure'. Then we can understand words like 'sturdy and strong'.

I know a Thai guy who keeps crocs in his garden in rayong... Hopefully a flood never hits the neighbourhood or they might escape and eat somebody....

Thais have not much care about responsibility usually... But I guess went should they when enforcement is so lax...

And most were found at the fence line after the floodwaters receded wanting to get back in.

They aren't stupid - they know where an easy feed comes from!

but in Thailand the owners are less likely to get them back, and a lot of them are accidentally killed, sold and eaten and become handbags and shoes......

I smell a low-budget horror film in the works.

My wife use to work there For the Thai police, she was a small arms instructor,, her part time job was to stand and watch the shows with a loaded gun , to shoot the crock if any of the trainers got into serious difficulty. Crocodiles are not stupid, they can reason and think.
