Face Recognition Equipment to be Installed at Thai Border Checkpoints
By Manop Thip-Osod

BANGKOK – Speaking at a security seminar in Bangkok on Friday, police spokesman Pol Gen Prawut Thavornsiri said the face recognition equipment will be installed at every border checkpoint, to make the process of immigration screening more efficient and to prevent transnational crimes.

Pol Gen Prawut said the bio-metric scanning technology scans facial features to detect if they match criminal profiles.

Currently, it is difficult to identify the actual nationality of travelers and check if they have criminal records as some people use fake passports.

This going to cut into the Russian mobs Thailand trips...

The only draw back with this system is maintenance, they must work all the time and seeing the equipment will be surrounded by personal without experience in IT or degree's in computers and probably using the fast track Thai method , possibly maintained by someone who thinks they are a gun in computers, this will test the border immigration skills and people wanting to enter Thailand patience. coffee1.gif

Trouble is we all look the same to them!

Correct, and not to mention that before corruption is gone the real bad guys won't go past the system.

Still maybe this time they prove us wrong, i hope so because extra security as such is not bad. Just if its implemented badly.

What happened to the fingerprint scanners which there were talking about not long ago?

This technology along with fingerprint scanners has been in use at government departments for a few years now for attendance monitoring. My wife can't recall any problem in the 3+ years its been in operation where she works. They do have an IT guy employed to maintain it and the work computers.

A step forward, should put them in the Bars at Sungai golok, the place might have to close down.

The procurement folks will budget for five thousand of these devices at five times market value.

Two thousand of them will be delivered.

A thousand of those will be transferred or re-assigned to 'inactive posts'.

A few hundred will be put away in 'storage'.

The rest will be installed, but a large number of those will be inoperative within a year or so.

A few inbound travelers may actually have their photos taken.

This could help them with all of the lost face they constantly obsessing over...

would be nice to read more stories about this 'has been done' instead of 'going to be done'

good idea!

can trace and kick out farangs who were banned to enter the kingdom and changed passport. it will make the air in Thai tourist spots much better.

A balanced post - appears to have a chip on both shoulders! :)

The plastic surgery industry might profit from this.

First establish a competant IT support structure within immigration. Then train the operators properly. Like the ones that were trained to use the false bomb detectors. I canot see these tools working properly for some time until a decent support structure is in place.

' Talking About ' might be the operative words here.

I predict lots of "break downs" and "malfunctions". I wonder how they will handle false positives or other issues? What is the response time? What if no detection or recognition occurs? Let the people in manually?
