Israeli PM warns against vigilantism

JERUSALEM: -- Israel’s prime minister has condemned the beating by an angry mob of a wounded Eritrean migrant who was mistakenly believed to be involved in an attack at a bus station. The man later died.

Mila Abtum was initially shot by a security guard in a gun battle with a man thought to have been a Palestinian who shot and killed an Israeli soldier and wounded several other bystanders.

In an address to his right-wing Likud Party Benjamin Netanyahu warned against vigilantism and the volatile mix of social media and religious extremism.

“A crowd which forms at an attack site should evacuate the area and let the emergency services do their job. We’ve laws in this country. No one should take the law into his own hands. That’s the first rule. Secondly, what we see here is a combination of extremist Islam and the Internet. It’s Osama bin Laden meets Mark Zuckerberg.”

But tension is high after almost three weeks of violence which has left 41 Palestinians and eight Israelis dead.

Besides implementing new security measures including deploying troops on the streets and sealing off Palestinian neighbourhoods in East Jerusalem, several Israeli cities including Tel Aviv are now banning Arab labourers from working in schools.

One Israeli worker said, “ People are hysterical . No one is thinking with logic, everything is scary and fearful.”

The current unrest began over a row concerning a Holy site revered by both Jews and Muslims. It has triggered a wave of Palestinian attacks which shows no signs of abating.

The Holy site is at the al-Aqsa mosque compound which is also the location of two destroyed biblical temples.

The civilized man warns against vigilantism and asserts the rule of law, the savage provokes vigilantism and then abdicates all responsibility for so doing.

Like the mayor who has advised Israelis to carry guns.
To carry a licensed gun is to do so legally. I suppose by your logic women should not carry pepper sprays to defend themselves against rapists.

Yes, the "civilized man" has warned against vigilantism... after expanding illegal settlements and becoming the poster boy for radical Zionism.

Yea, give the people guns to protect themselves. That would be fair because now the Palestinians run around with kitchen knifes, throwing stones and are so desperate that even the likelihood of getting shot is not deterring them.... Give the Palestinians real arms bacause Merkava thanks and Tavor rifles against knifes and stones is just not fair play!

If you don't pick up a knife to try and stab someone to death you aren't going to get shot. P.s there is no 'fairness' in stabbing a 13 year old boy or 70 year old woman just because they happen to be Jewish.

Netanyahu's pleas are in marked contrast to the incitement from Abbas and his Fatah party, what an utter joke these murderous hyenas registering with the ICC.

Netanyahu waited to see which way the wind blows with media and public opinion, and then issued his "warning". If he actually cared, he would have said the same after the first time this happened, and by now steps would have been taken. Could have at least reined in some of his vocal party and coalitions members. Talk is cheap.

The only saving grace of this "warning" is. perhaps, that it is made public. Perhaps a rung up from not saying anything at all, and a couple from condoning the lynch.

Would it be more appealing to your sense of fairness if Israeli citizens were encouraged to carry knives and rocks as means of self-defense?
