CAT will proceed with the plan to build a national Internet gateway

All this article says is: CAT is building an international gateway.

So what? They're already operating one (or a few). They need to build more international bandwidth. That, people, is a good thing. I am not seeing anything about establishing a monopoly, or preventing others from investing in their own international gateways.

keep on raging, guys *

You should read what the PM has to say about this in today's news.

The intent is clearly not about increasing bandwidth. It's about controlling access and content.

As do news lovers and those seeking information, some of which may be unflattering to the government of the day.

Do we put you down as a fan of such a scheme, then?

Can anyone name any attempt by Thailand to be the hub of anything ever succeed?

Several

1) Hub of Corruption

2) Hub of Nepotism

3) Hub of Government incompetence

4) Hub of Military incompetence

To name but 4

I agree with the first 3 - Pheu-Thai were the absolute worst for them all. The first two go without saying and Chalerm + Plodprasop (both deputy PM's) take the biscuit for the third.

But I would venture you have not a clue about military skill or incompetence. Therefore you are just an anti-Junta whiner and I have a feeling your hypocrisy means you didn't mean the dirty cronies with your first 3 points either.

Anyone with an opinion worth listening to would have put police incompetence as number 4. Again a product of red-shirt ethics.

The thin line between hyperbole and self parody. You crossed it.

i am a fan of military juntas, not limited to Thailand. unfortunately most of the juntas are not long enough in power to having lasting effects, e.g. cleaning out the proverbial Augias stables.

i am neither interested in unflattering nor flattering news of the country's government in which i reside as a guest. moreover, really important news can't be suppressed as there are many ways to obtain them.

It's possible that by "single gateway", they mean they will be installing distributed installations of things like BlueCoat which will be centrally managed by and report to a government control centre, but which will filter and report on each ISP's own connection.

But the net result is the same: Government snooping.

My internet service has been terrible lately I am getting timed out or error 404 so much in the last couple days.

Mine too. Speeds in the last 3 weeks have been terrible. Some days it is even bad on the LAN connection and generally that is fine.

I feel a bout of Thainess coming on. CAT announces it's going to beef up it's IIG in order to meet the growing demand for international traffic and the cyberthais start bombing the already non-functional government websites, the result being Thai bandwidth to outside world reduced to 1/10 of current. There must be a brilliant Sino-Thai mind behind this scheme.

I started this thread some time ago.

http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/862736-do-you-think-the-single-gateway-is-in-place-already/

The symptoms of websites not loading and frequent disconnecting from ISP are still ongoing as of today. There were a few days in between that everything was normal, but this week it's same same again.

Funny enough those issues start around 9am and stop at 16.30.

My provider is a CAT reseller.

It's the nub hub of Katoy.

Seriously though (and back on topic), Thailand's military junta emulates China. China has strict controls on internet, so naturally Thailand wants to follow suit. It wouldn't surprise me if China played a part in influencing the Thai generals on this flawed 'gateway' plan.

That is giving them more credit then they deserve. It is simply about buying as little bandwidth as possible - making a monopoly out of it access to it - then reselling something they don't own. Follow the money. It is a way to tax the whole internet with resulting cost and performance losses passed on to the paying public.

It is legal corruption and for the peoples own good - anyone that can't see that will get an adjustment.

The aim of the project is not to control the flow of information into the country over the Internet as some fear, said CAT acting chief executive officer Colonel Sanpachai Huvanandana.

Wait a minute - I thought somebody had the PM saying just the opposite in a memo a couple weeks ago...?

IIRC, it was the same memo in which Dear Leader said "let's fast track this single gateway thing!"

So they are just going to do it anyway and the General can just say "It's not me, it's CAT doing it"cheesy.gifcheesy.gif . Thailand the hub of censorship and slow internet.wai2.gif

Similar to how they're going to buy those 4 subs from China, regardless that everyone outside their circle of back-slapping grinning-ear-to-ear top brass is against it.

Note: about 15 yrs ago Thailand was asked to join in with other SE Asian countries - to help pay for an internet cable under the Pacific. At the time, Thai officials opted out, saying the internet was not important enough. Plus, they were buying an aircraft carrier.

I am not at all surprised at this statement.

The Colonel in charge of CAT stated ( roughly 2/3 weeks ago ) that all independent ISP Companies would be more than welcome to use CAT servers in order to " reduce their costs ".

Writing was on the wall then for all to read.

Right. "You will be happy with my announcement."

Or: "We have the most guns. We have uniforms with lots of commendations. We are well-connected socially and we are rich. So of course we know better than you - about what's right."

This is not a censorship-driven plan. That's as believable as the general's promises to restore democracy by 2016 2017

Correction: This is not a censorship-driven plan. That's as believable as the general's promises to restore democracy by 2016 2017, 2018, 2019,......... 2050,.... 2699, 99999999********** NOT IN million lifetimes indefinitely wai2.gif wai2.gif cheesy.gif cheesy.gif cheesy.gif

CAT has always held the government monopoly to build and operate the international undersea cable landing stations, and also to cooperate in any undersea cable consortia. So, actually, it has always controlled the physical gateway.

But, yes, Chicog is on to the implications of this latest announcement probably, so it is probably what everyone is expecting who has responded herein.

Are you allowed your own satellite connection in Thailand? Hard for them to sniff that.

Nope. Big trouble if they find you operating in the C+ band, and in fact in any frequency as they are all state controlled.

You can't apply fir a license?

Good luck with that. See you in 10 years. ICT is notoriously slow, just look how long it has taken for 3G and 4G implementation. Wimax never made it here, came and went everywhere else and Thailand still waiting. You can't even legally operate a 2.4 or 5.8GHz home wireless telephone here.

If the single gateway really goes ahead it proves for certain that the junta is entrenched for the long term.

Seems like there will not be any democratic elections here for a very very long time.

I think the junta foresees a form of "controlled" democracy much the same that the Burmese military is trying to foist onto its populous. A lot of big businesses are flocking to Burma to set up shop. They like this style of government as it "controls" the workers turning them into manageable mannequins. Ditto for surrounding countries. This also follows the Chinese form of "capitalism" These systems work well when your starting out from bottom and the only way is up. The populous thanks God or Budda or whoever for small mercies.
