CHIANG MAI: -- A 2.5 million baht initial compensation was yesterday presented to the family of a Chinese tourist who died in an accident while riding a zipline in Chiang Maki’s Mae Rim district on October 11.

The compensation presentation took place at Chiang Mai provincial hall and attended by governor Pawin Chamniprasart, Chiang Mai tourism business association president Pornchai Chitnawasathien, deputy provincial police chief Pol Co Pisanu Oonhaseri, Chiang Mai sports and tourism director Montri Piyakul, Mrs Patcharamon Sunthraporn, chairwoman of Flying Squirrel Company which operates the zipline services and family of the dead victim, Mrs Wang Xi.

The father of the victim told the media through an interpreter that he had no ill feeling against the Thai people or Thailand for the death of his daughter. He thanked all parties concerned for the warm and friendly reception accorded to his family while staying in Chiang Mai.

Governor Pawin said that 1,5 million baht of the compensation came from Flying Squirrel Company and the rest from an insurance company. However, he said the family was entitled to 300,000 baht aid from the Sports and Tourism Ministry and another one million baht if the fatal incident meets the set criteria.

However, the governor said legal proceedings against the zipline operator would continue.

Initially, the zipline operator claimed that the victim died of shock but her friends were not convinced. Doctors at Nakhon Ping hospital where the victim was rushed to for treatment confirmed she broke her neck and there were bruises on her chest.

Thailand want to bee seen doing the right

thing by the Chinese tourists now, hence the ceremony and quick resolution of the case,

Good to see that the Thai government and the Zip line operators have shown and taken full

responsibly for the negligence and poor maintenance with a fair compensations,

as only few years ago, there would have been complete silence on the matter, denial and

meager amount paid only for funeral expenses...

Being a white boy from the USA, I wonder if my family would be compensated if I died in the same or similar way here?

Totally depends on how much media coverage your death would receive and under which circumstances you came to pass away. If they had managed to sweep this story under the rug, the family of the deceased would have gotten 100k at the most, if even that

Agree. It's all about saving face. No media coverage, no loss of face. Death gets media coverage and harms Thailand's image, especially with their new friends in China, and something has to be done.

So, how much do you think your life is worth?

In the US, the FDA came up with a figure of 7.9 million (US dollars).

Seems life if pretty cheap here!

Realistically, earning potential until age 60-65 in the country you live.

Which in Thailand probably isn't much.

And makes most of us over 60 essentially worthless.

as if the payoff isn't disgusting enough they have to present it in such a celebratory way, a tray full of cash??? This is even more shameful then the way they parade the cash around at a Thai wedding. Absolutely no dignity here.

There are quite a few Thai smiles in the photo.

The presentation is obscene.

Surely they have heard of EFT or placed the cash in a plain paper bag?

2.5 million " initial" payment !!

How much more are they going to get??

And how much did that actress/nun pay for killing that cop while screaming around in her Merc??

Less than 2.5 million as far as i remember.blink.png

Ah but.... there are plenty of Cops.

However Chinese Tourists must be given every encouragement to come here, safe in the knowledge that should any

unfortunate accident take place, the family will be looked after.

Has there been any media reports on how the authorities have implimented new safety controls and inspections so this kind if thing cant happen again?

Or will there just be another pile of cash sliding back across the table so these cowboys can keep operating with impunity?
