Don't join campaign to wear red, Yingluck tells supporters

BANGKOK: -- FORMER prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra has asked her supporters not to join a campaign that is calling on them to wear red on November 1 - to show moral support for her.

Yingluck was afraid that by wearing red in her support, her backers could end up sparking a new conflict, her team's staff member, Wim Rungwattanajinda, said yesterday.

Wim said Yingluck did not know who had initiated the online campaign for supporters to wear red, but the former PM thought the move would create a divide, instead of real backing for her.

The government is seeking damages from Yingluck, who has been held responsible for the loss of more than Bt500 billion stemming from her government's corruption-plagued rice-pledging scheme.

Yingluck had already acknowledged people's support through their warm greetings during her recent temple trips in several provinces, Wim said. So, he said, she thought the plan for a symbolic act of support was not necessary.

"If one day people see Yingluck receives injustice, they will come out by themselves anyway." Wim said. Yingluck's lawyer Norrawit Larlaeng yesterday declined to comment on the legal consequences of the act of support.

He said he had not discussed the matter with the former PM.

National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) spokesman Colonel Winthai Suvari warned yesterday that the authorities would take action against any red-wearing protest - if it was provocative.

He said such an activity would need to be allowed by relevant authorities.

The NCPO does not limit people's rights, Winthai said, but rather seeks cooperation from people in a specific, sensitive political situation. For example, the act of wearing red could be seen in a political perspective, despite the reported intention to show support to Yingluck.

Government spokesman Maj-General Sansern Kaewkamnerd said the NCPO and the government would not prohibit such a gathering, if it happened. The government also wishes to remain still (???) on the matter, for example whether a gathering of more than five people would be banned.

People, however, should use their discretion to see if the act of wearing red could once again divide Thai society, Sansern added.

Humm, how do you make wearing RED provocative? If enough people did wear red they couldn't possibly arrest them all. They would look foolish trying. Oh, they already look foolish.

hmm if your red mini skirt was too short, or if you are showing some shoulders they will send you to get your brain cleaned ....NCPO is getting ridiculous on clamping down on everything....they need to just chill out and not respond to everything out there

They better wear red (or whatever colour they decide) for themselves and their rights, forget the billionaires it's about time. The Shinawatras have done nothing but silencing protest against the junta just to save their own butt.

BS! The press was much freer during the times when the electorate magnanimously was allowed to cast a vote. Was there intimidation taking place? Sure, but that was amateur hour compared to what's going on now - much less what they plan to do.

If that all we have to complain about then I would consider life pretty good. Personally I'm more concerned with the economy.

Thank heaven! I can keep on my red socks.

I believe that China had intervened because as things are going, Siam may soon be a Chinese province and wearing red will be mandatory.

She's in the middle of trying to cut a deal and doesn't want any lo-so distractions.

I guess that is the point.....better sharing some money than going into jail....everyone happy and on the next elections her sister can do the usual vote buying and than recover the money once in government.

When some country side red shirts who really believe that the Shinawatras are their friends make some troubles the hole deal may implode.

And so the politic soap opera continues....

Try reading what I wrote one more time. And do try to open your eyes to what the military's end goal is and then ask yourself if they had a finger in the unrest or not.

Ask the cartoonist who the Shin's set Tharit on because he dared make a cartoon of their pretty.

Or those journalists and media companies Thaksin sued because they dared to publish something he disliked. (A trick he learned from the late Mr. Lee).

Or the time they tried to get the Cyber police unit to warn people they would be tracked down and prosecuted for even just "liking" a negative comment about the Shins, not even actually writing it.

Amateur hour - <deleted> was it. And your feeble attempt to try and make it look meaningless is the same <deleted>.
