October 23, 201510 yr Thailand, Japan to launch eco-friendly dumpsiteVISARUT SANKHAMTHE NATIONBANGKOK: -- A DUMPSITE in Nakhon Ratchasima province is set to embrace a Japanese technique to reduce waste pollution, in a collaboration with Japan, the head of the Pollution Control Department (PCD) has announced.Wijarn Simachaya said the PCD hopes the dumpsite in Sikhio district will become a role model for other dumpsites in Thailand. The Bt8.5-million Semi-Aerobic Landfill will use the "Fukuoka method" and be the heart of the new dumpsite, to be implemented by the PCD, Fukuoka Prefecture Government, the Kyushu International Centre and the Environmental Sanitation Centre."This technique will allow bacteria to tackle waste more efficiently, and ensure proper wastewater treatment," Wijarn said. The technique will efficiently dispose of both household and industrial waste, he said. Two types of pipes are put under the waste disposal area, which will have waterproof sheet membranes. Other pipes are used to drain wastewater that leaks from trash - to a treatment site.Takenori Kamasaki, of the Fukuoka Prefectural Government, said the "Fukuoka method" was found to be the most popular and reliable way to handle waste. "After 50 years of success, it has become a role model across Japan," he said.Pollution Control officials and Japanese academics conducted a survey to find the most suitable area for the dumpsite. Sikhio district in Nakhon Ratchasima was selected because it was overloaded with waste.Preecha Janthararaugtong, president of Sikhio municipality, said Sikhio has a very limited capacity to handle waste disposal. "People here generate 16 tonnes of waste a day. Our current capacity can't cope with that," he said.Embracing the Japanese technique, the new 7,299 cubic meter-capacity dumping site will rely on a mechanical biological treatment system."I firmly believe that this method will significantly help to get rid of the overloaded garbage situation in Sikhio," Preecha said.Source: http://www.nationmultimedia.com/national/Thailand-Japan-to-launch-eco-friendly-dumpsite-30271496.html-- The Nation 2015-10-24
October 24, 201510 yr There is no such thing as an "eco-friendly" dump site, only environmental impact minimisation. I am surprised that this technology is newsworthy, afterall it has been around for ...say 50 years.
October 25, 201510 yr "Pollution Control officials and Japanese academics conducted a survey to find the most suitable area for the dumpsite. Sikhio district in Nakhon Ratchasima was selected because it was overloaded with waste." Choosing a dumpsite in Thailand is an extremely good idea and very eco-friendly for Japan. If they transport all of their future waste to Thailand and pay the Korat authorities to dump it there, this strategy would improve the environment in Japan very much indeed. I am surprised more countries do not yet follow this plan..... Thailand will surely take the money.
