UN votes to condemn United States embargo on Cuba



NEW YORK: -- The United Nations General Assembly has voted to condemn the United States embargo on Cuba.

It was the first vote on the resolution since the two countries restored diplomatic ties.

Israel joined the US in voting no.

Cuba estimates the embargo has caused the equivalent of 109 billion euros in damages to its economy.

US President Barack Obama told the UN General Assembly last month that he was “confident” the US Congress “will inevitably lift an embargo that should not be in place any more.”

The resolution welcomes the renewed ties and recognises “the expressed will” of Obama to end the embargo.

Such resolutions are non-binding, but they can carry political weight.

I'm sure the US Congress would be glad to lift the embargo placed during JFK's admininstration when Cuba pays the $6 billion worth of financial claims against it. Maybe the UN General Assembly can take up a collection to pay off the USA.

Otherwise, unitl the Democrats take control of both the House and Senate, the embargo will stay.

Since pre-Castro Cuba was effectively owned by the American mafia, Cuba owes the USofA not a single cent.

Perhaps Cuba can make a deal with the mob and then all will be returned to normal.....

Probably the most stable country in the Caribbean with the best medical facilities, education facilities, one of the lowest child mortality rates, minimal drug problems, minimal gun crime and still operating after 50 years of embargo.Its seems incredible when you compare Cuba to the multiple corrupt governments and countries worldwide that the USA still keeps the stupid embargo going. But many USA companies do have plans in place and have done for many years for when the embargo is lifted. Its a shame that such a nice holiday destination will be completely swamped with guns and drugs one the the embargo is lifted.

I have been there three times - Havana, Holguin, Guadalavaca and some smaller towns and can report that the continuous transmissions from USA beamed at Cuba are having the desired effect and convincing ordinary people of the importance of owning dishwashers and all the other modern appliances etc.

A case where the UN is right.

The vast majority of Americans today favor full normalization of U.S.-Cuban relations anyway, and that's where this is headed, anyway.

So I don't even get the point of that U.N. show vote.

I think there are still issues both sides want to negotiate about so full normalization won't happen overnight, but the UN vote does nothing to speed it up.

It's between the U.S. and Cuba. End of.
