Water shortage worsens in Uthai Thani

UTHAI THANI, 29 October 2015 (NNT) - The Governor of Uthai Thani province has told farmers not to grow off-season rice, due to insufficient water in the provincial reserves.

Instead, farmers are encouraged grow drought-tolerant crops that require little water to survive and meet market demand, or else raise cattle, which are always in high demand.

Uthai Thani Governor Prapat Malakan said the amount of water in local reservoirs has fallen below half their combined capacity of 160 million cubic meters. The governor indicated that there is only enough water for household consumption.

Mr. Prapat also told local residents to follow Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha’s advice on water conservation and use water wisely.

As for the water levels in Thap Salao Reservoir, 53 million cubic meters of water or only 32% of capacity can be used for consumption and preserving the ecosystem. The governor cited the need to keep the amount of water stable, in order to maintain the structural integrity of the reservoir.
