The Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday ordered British businessman Gregg Fryett to choose new lawyers by November 6 or be represented by a court-appointed lawyer after accusing him of attempting to delay proceedings by demanding new representation.

Presiding judge Chuon Soreasey accused Fryett – who is on trial with five others over allegations of massive fraud – of undertaking multiple efforts to slow proceedings, including suing to change the composition of the bench, demanding an English interpreter when none was available and then subsequently rejecting an interpreter after one was provided.

(At the time, Fryett had contended that the interpreter was unacceptable because he was an employee of the Anti-Corruption Unit, the body that investigated Fryett’s case.)

if it is Legal in Cambodia to request new representation, then there is absolutely nothing wrong with this and its a stupid story to report.

and if his translator is from the Anti-Corruption bureau (which is also prossecuting against him), then it would also be reasonable to request a translator that is not affiliated or bias.

honestly, there is nothing unusual and he is not delaying anything. he is simply asking for his 'rights to a fair and unbias trial'.

The guy simply wants to defend himself correctly.

(even though he himself has allegedly defrauded people, he still is entitled, by law, to have a fair trial).

Has Greg Fryett ever lived in Thailand? Maybe not, but he seems to be well versed in the Thai 'elite' culture of delaying the legal process to protect his own skin. Good luck to him if what he's doing is within the law in Cambodia.

Following the Phnom Penh Municipal Court’s order that he choose new lawyers, British businessman Gregg Fryett spoke out yesterday, asserting his innocence in the multimillion-dollar fraud case against him that began last month.

In an email, Fryett, who is also wanted in Britain, characterised his detention as “highly contentious”, and slammed the prosecution as “struggling to evidence any of the allegations”.

“This is nothing more than a false prosecution brought by corrupt officials thereby falsely imprisoning us,” he wrote, adding that he felt the court’s conduct was damaging the image of the judiciary, as well as that of the country as an investment for foreign capital.
