PM upset over chasing of tourist by beach chair operator in Pattaya

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha yesterday warned local authorities that he would hold them responsible for negligence of duties if the beach chair business return again on the beaches where ban has been in effective.

Warning by the prime minister came as a video footage went viral in the social media showing a beach chair operator chasing a group of foreign tourists away from sitting on the beach next to her chairs.

Angered by the improper behaviour of the beach chair operator on Wong Ammart beach in Pattaya, Gen Prayut questioned why such business was still allowed to continue despite of his policy to regulate beach and return happiness to the people.

He was serious with the beach regulation as it was the image of the country, stating he was so upset to see the video footage.

“Why did it happen, and why the tourists had to be chased away when it was a quarrel of two beach chair operators,” he said at a press conference yesterday.

He said soldiers have regulated the beach and it was the duty of local authorities to make sure the illegal business would never return to the beaches.

He said he would hold local authorities responsible if such incident happens again.

Following the prime minister’s warning, yesterday Pattaya officials went to the Wong Ammart beach and summoned four beach chair operators to a meeting with ultimatum for them to immediately shut down their business on the beach.

Regional police commissioner Pol Lt Gen Thanet Pinmuangam said the beach is public property and therefore no one would be allowed to occupy to do business

He said operators had failed to register their businesses and if they continue to set up beach chairs on public spaces, they would be prosecuted.

Awesome! the safety and well being of all visitors is paramount to a strong visitor industry. Its a sustainable industry that has been abused in Thailand for many many years. And sorry to say this rip off the Foreigner attitude may have been promoted by the Governments own two tear pricing schedule. That should be eliminated immediately. It projects a very bad practice and visitors dont like it. Its discriminatory and wrong. Its not the money its the attitude projected that its ok to charge double. Visitors have many many choices they do not have to come here. I remember when you could not get a seat at a restaurant or bar here, Then it was the land of smiles unlike today... ;)

And so he should be rightfully so, if he only knew the bad stuff that is going on with maltreatments of

tourists on a daily bases everywhere around Thailand, for the double and triple price and fee gouging

to the thuggish and boorish behavior of ski and other holiday rentals operators and such, he'd be

real mad and upset....

Because you still allow RTP to collect protection money from the beach vendors, who then feel empowered and entitled to do whatever they want on the beach as they have paid for exclusive sales territory, in their eyes.

Start reading. The action that he took was to shut down the 4 businesses operating illegally on that beach.

I certainly would not want to be that deckchair vendor, doesnt look like a great career or future.

Well not really a great future or career as he was working illegally wasn't he. Hw should be kicked out of the country. ( If he is a Cambodian )

How many of these announcements has he made across the nation how he is going to "shut down" corruption, mafia, and the like?

He shut down FOUR businesses???? Well, blow me away.

If you had said four hundred, I might be impressed.

Well when the man at the top gets to hear... things happen.

Maybe someone should bring to his attention the activities of the Jet Ski operators ans the the frequent boat a ferry sinkings around Pattaya... for starters.

Looks like the cop in the pic does not look happy as if that's his monthly bonus packing up... gigglem.gif

I think the illegal part was the police renting the beach to the vendors in the first place, but they will be able to keep their gains and continue, probably in the same place tomorrow after the army leaves

Our beloved PM is upset again? Is there something which doesn't makes him upset? Anything?

I wonder how serene you would be, as PM, if you were faced with addressing ( and cleaning up)the accumulated rubbish of the last 20 years? It may be 30 or 40, but I gave only lived here since 1995. I can confirm that it has not been the Land Of Smiles for Farang for a long, long time.

EXACTLY!!! Thank you for that, you couldn't be more correct!!

Do not fault the vendors, go after the source and discipline the BIB. They are the ones that are selling the beaches and the roads for their own benefit.

The same thing with the roads, the BIB sell the streets and sidewalks as if it is their own property.

To hell with the traffic and and safety problems caused by this, they get their tea money so society be damned.

They cleaned up Sukhumvit 11 when the Junta first came to power but now it is almost as bad as it was a year and a half ago (but not quite as bad yet).

The extortion taxi's have come back a bit more every week along with the sidewalk food vendors.

You can;t walk on the sidewalks and you can't even squeeze a motorcycle taxi down the street anymore.

Time for another crackdown on the BIB!!! Do your jobs you corrupt, lazy scumbags.

Better plan is to lynch them. Anybody in the kkk can think of looking for a place to call home after their names are exposed by Anonymous.

The four beach vendors are gone. Sounds like action to me.

You need to read more. He's done way more than shut down these four businesses. Yes a lot more needs to be done, but you're either uninformed or are disingenuous.

Why not set an example and punish them now !

You are absolutely wrong about charging double. That does not happen in Thailand.............The charge goes up ten times for foreign tourists.

"if the beach chair business return again on the beaches where ban has been in effective." Looks like a typo error to me... should have been "..where ban has been ineffective."

Any pools as to how long until they are back?

If you had said four hundred, I might be impressed. Oh really! What about the vast majority of decent Thai people trying to make a livelihood?

Get rid off the Mafia who are hounding the decent vendors for "protection money".

So the only there were deck chairs in the first place was that there was demand for them, mainly from tourists.

I find the whole issue a bit bizzare.

Good for tourism???

I wish the General would send his army boys down just to clean up the beaches. Down Pattaya way the beach at Ban Amphur is a disgrace. It would be the best swimming beach but no one in power cares. So sad.

Wel if they are so poor and rely heavily on tourists why do they treat them like crap? Ok, they did not rent that day, but maybe they could have asked politely if they would like to rent, and maybe they rent tomorrow. Also, the reputation shows them in such a bad light tourists will not want to give such people their money.

About time these people learnt how to treat guests and customers and then maybe their business would improve and people will be much happier all round.

Depsite what they believe and / or are told foreigners are not all millionaires and they think before they spend their money. Also, the majority of people no matter where they are from respond positively to polite and decent service,, its not rocket science.
