Lion Air flight cancelled after passenger makes bomb joke
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- A Lion Air flight was abruptly cancelled yesterday afternoon after one of the passengers jokingly suggested that his carry-on bag might have contained explosives in his bid to attract a flight attendant, an ongoing police investigation revealed.

Pol Colonel Surachet Bandhit, superintendent of Don Muang Police Station, said yesterday the joke was made when a flight attendant was about to put the bag in the overhead bin.

"In line with safety procedures, the flight attendant decided to alert the captain. After that, the flight was cancelled, all passengers were evacuated, and the man who mentioned the explosives on the flight was handed over to investigators," Surachet said.

According to him, the man - identified as Pichit Boondaeng - told police that he just meant to tease the flight attendant as he wanted to woo her.

An explosive-ordnance-disposal team found no bombs inside Pichit's bag.

The 23-year-old suspect was charged with spreading false information that caused panic inside an aircraft. If convicted, he may face up to five years in jail and/or a maximum fine of Bt200,000.

Lion Air is also preparing to sue him for compensation because his action caused serious commercial damages as the flight could not provide services as scheduled.

The flight's route was from Don Mueang Airport to Hat Yai Airport.

Incredible. An imaginary weapon smuggled onto a plane is punished more heavily than an actual weapon smuggled onto a plane. Can I make a wild assumption that this Pichit is not as rich and politically connected as our Kamronwit?

What an idiot! He deserves all he gets.

Hopefully it won't be the usual slap on the wrist.

The way things are worldwide situations like this are never jokes and can't be excused as one.

Are they complete crazy?

which terrorist (with a bomb in the carry-on bag) is teasing the flight attendant while she stores his bomb?

Is common sense illegal now?

Pichit Boondaeng doesn't sound like the name of a radical Muslim.

And in the worst case the captain could have told him to empty his bag and show him the content.....and than proceed.

There is no need to follow the American nonsense on domestic flights.

120 people in bkk was blown to bits a few weeks ago by a backpack

and they are supposed to not take a possible bomb in bag seriously ?

even if its a joke it could start a panic among the passenegrs and cause havoc

on a flight

just make him open the bomb in front of all the other passsnegers?? :D

im glad youre not in charge of my safety procedures !:)

Your point is taken, however, Kamronwitless did not make mention of the gun whilst on the plane, the pilot and crew were unaware that it was "supposedly" on board.

In this instance Dipshit Boondaeng was foolish enough to run his mouth and now faces the financial and legal consequences. Major face loss here.

Moral of the story is shut up and don't mention bomb, explosive or gun when waiting for take off.

Don't sneeze and shout "I've been to Africa, either"

The men in the spacesuits come and take you away :)

Thai Lion Air cancels a flight to Hat Yai following a bomb hoax

BANGKOK: -- A 23-year-old passenger was detained for questioning by Don Mueang sub-police station after he told a flight attendant that there was a bomb hidden in his carry-on baggage.

He could also face a civil suit as Thai Lion Air, a low-cost carrier, said what he said had forced the airline to delay its flight from Don Muaeng to Hat Yai for security check.

The incident happened to Thai Lion Air’s flight to Hat Yai which was scheduled to take off from Don Mueang at 2.30 pm on Sunday.

One passenger, identified later as Pichit Boondaeng, 23, cautioned a flight attendant while she was putting baggage into the overhead baggage compartment to carefully handle his baggage as a bomb was inside.

She alerted the pilot who later decided to cancel the flight and immediately report the airport security.

All passengers were evacuated and all baggage were brought out for check by explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) officials.

He was taken for questioning at Don Mueang sub police station.

He admitted what he said to the flight attendant was merely a joke.

Police later charged him for giving false information that had frightened people at the airport.

The charge could land him in prison for five years at maximum or a fine of not more than 200,000 baht, or both.

Thai Lion Air also filed a complaint with the police and was considering a civil case against him to demand compensation for damages caused after the flight could not take off on schedule.

What a Moron !

Hope he gets THE MAX.

Lock him up for 5 years and hit him for the largest possible fine.

Make an example of him to dissuade other idiots from doing the same.

Does this earn him a spot on the NO FLY list? w00t.gif

Seriously, I believe him, he was just ignorant and goofing around. Not the crime of the century.

How about just make him do an ad campaign to talk about it ... sending him to jail when there was no malicious intention ... that's draconian.
