Thailand receives high ratings for tackling child labor

BANGKOK, 4 November 2015 (NNT) - A report by the United States Department of Labor praised Thailand’s efforts in tackling the issue of child labor.

According to the Government Spokesman Bureau, the Thai government has continuously placed great emphasis on the issue of child labor in the country.

Most recently, the United States Department of Labor issued its 2014 report on the child labor situation worldwide and has ranked Thailand among the 13 countries with exemplary efforts in addressing the issue of child labor.

The report praised Thailand’s progress in tackling the matter by establishing a committee on illegal alien labor and human trafficking problems, raise the minimum age for those working in the agricultural and fishing sectors, strictly following up on its labor policy, and adhering to international guidelines on combating child labor.

The Spokesman Bureau added that the report reflected the government’s determination in tackling the country’s longstanding problems, not only concerning child labor, but also illegal alien labor and human trafficking.

Turn the question around and ask yourself , if Thailand wasn't on the watch list just where would the progress be made, it is indeed a sorry state of affairs when a country has to be on a watch list because of child labour exploitation and that country has to be cajoled and intimidated into submission to do something about it. because that countries administration are either too lazy or turn a blind eye to this practice.....coffee1.gif

In the US DOL 2014 report, the main summary paragraph contains 50% praise, and 50% criticism. The 2nd half reads:

"However, children in Thailand continue to engage in child labor in agriculture, including in the shrimp and seafood processing sector, and in the worst forms of child labor, including in commercial sexual exploitation. Thailand remains weak in its enforcement efforts, particularly in the fishing, agriculture, manufacturing, and home-based business sectors, as well as in the informal sector. The Government also lacks nationwide data on child labor, which impedes the effectiveness of policies and programs."

The Government Spin Bureau chose to ignore these substantial criticisms.
