An engineer is fired after he was caught demanding bribe

BANGKOK:-- A Justice Ministry’s engineer was temporarily relieved from the service after he was caught red-handed accepting 30,000 baht in bribe from water pump supplier at his office on Friday.

Acting on a complaint filed by the supplier, MAC Construction Company, that the engineer in charge of construction at the Office of Justice Permanent Secretary, Mr Santi Mayura, had demanded 40,000 baht from the firm, a team of officials from the Government’s Anti-Corruption Committee and police from Thung Song Hong was today dispatched the permanent secretary’s office to lay in wait.

The waiting officials sprang into action and arrested Mr Santi after he received the money from a representative of the water pump supplier. The 30,000 baht cash were found in the possession of the engineer.

Justice permanent secretary Mrs Suwanna Suwanchutha described the incident as brazen as it took place in government office. She said she ordered the suspect to be relieved of service pending an investigation. She added that disciplinary action would also be taken against the suspect.

MAC Construction Company won a contract to build two 18-unit buildings for officials of the Juvenile Observation and Protection in Lop Buri. In order to install equipments such as water pumps at the two building, a permission has to be sought with the designing division of the Office of Justice Permanent Secretary.

Mr Santi who works as an engineer in the designing division has allegedly demanded a bribe from the water pump supplier in exchange for his permission to allow the water pumps to be installed.

That's all you really need to read to know what is wrong with this country, and as long as the authorities will not

take dishonesty and bribery a lot more seriously, than please, don't waste our time talking about crackdowns and purging

of the wrong doers that the PM is so keen on doing and yet, here it is, making a mockery of any efforts to right the wrong....

Suspended until he can undergo remedial training in the governmental etiquette and proper procedures for accepting bribes.

Hardly big news, although a thorough investigation, throughout this and associated government departments, should quickly reveal any connections with others involved and lead to the BIB etc. netting the really big fish and their corruption ridden gains.

If (as reported), this civil servant had demanded bribe money, then the government had better prosecute the investigation quickly (for its own credibility).

Could also mean the engineer didn't marry a rich wife, doesn't have a family name, doesn't have connections and is a lone wolf who didn't play by the rules and cut his boss in.

I would sue everyone for defamation and libel and make billions. and then use a very obscure law from 1298 that would give me another 11 billion baht.

in similar positions who demand bribes from the lower paid citizens of this country. This in my opinion is a far greater crime.

Actually, in defence of that statement it is in fact the correct way to do it. Anyone who is caught doing something wrong is automatically suspended from work "pending investigation". It has to be this way so all of the facts are considered before taking action. Of course they will find him guilty at which point he will be fired.

The bit that I don't understand is he has committed a criminal offence, so he should be arrested pending investigation, if found guilty he should be punished accordingly.

Losing his job is not enough if Thailand wants to show that they are dealing with corruption seriously. This low level corruption is eating at the heart of Thailand and it all stems from the top officials setting the scene that easy, corrupt money is ok. There are people everywhere that use their position to extract money wherever they can and people consider it ok and lucky if you can get it,, it stinks. It needs to be stamped on hard, they need to look at what China is doing to tackle corruption and take a leaf.

Make is shameful, make it a loss of face, make people fear the consequences then they will be truly tackling the issue.

I see your point but do you not think that all corruption should be treated the same way? Whether the company could afford it is irrelevant isn't it?

If you dont tackle ALL of it none of it will end including the extraction of money from poorer people.

In fact, I think if they show some big heads rolling over corruption and corruption like this being stomped on it will influence the stopping of corruption further down the line,, at least thats what I think anyway.

They need to set up the thug at CM Immigration who charges 500 baht for a certificate of residency... even though there is a sign above the windows that read, "7-10 days, this service is free" IF you don't pony up 500 baht, they will see you in 30 days. 500 baht for doing his job... what a joke.

The only disgrace for this guy is that he got caught doing something he must have done many times before. I'm sure there are a lot more in that office doing the same as well.
