I'm thinking of flying in and out of Thailand and hopefully getting 30 days on arrival then after that make an extending at immigration for a further 30 days as i only need 60 days before i return to UK.Is this possible to do without problems at the airport?.

The problem you could have is with the airline not allowing you to board your flight if you do not have a ticket out within 30 days.

Much better you apply BEFORE the initial 30 days is finished.

Most immigration offices will allow you to apply a week early and you will lose no days by doing that.

No you can't apply after the 30 days has finished. You can apply for the 30 day extension early so don't wait until the last day. The 30 day extension will apply from the end of the original 30 day stay so nothing is lost by applying a week or so early.

Yes you can. However, don't wait too long after arriving. After about 10 days in BKK, report to immigration in Chaeng Wattana and apply for the extension. Cost is 1900 baht.
