Taking ones own BBQ to resort areas ( Koh Samed)

Featured Replies

Just a general question really.

Does anyone know of a ban on BBQs on the likes of Koh Samed. ie. not being able to bring and cook your own food? My wife seems to think it's now illegal or at least frowned upon.

As I understood it one can pitch a tent and cook etc. on government land.

Any thoughts or info. on this topic would be much appreciated...Thanks

Better to ask the locals.....moved

our group have been to Koh Samet 40 times and never witnessed anyone cooking their own food.. Your wife is correct.

You can be a cheap charlie in some places at some times ........ but bringing your own food to Koh Samet is not one of them.

Leave your food at home .......... blink.png or you will spoil the trip

It depends. I know some places that have free bbqs to use when you stay there.

On the beach I think would be frowned on but I doubt the police will do anything

Might get linched by the locals (business owners)

Last time I was on Samed I had the feeling that they were only interested in tourists who spend big.

Also the beach barbecue is big business depending on which part of the island you're staying. If you're not staying too far from the pier there's a little market selling the usual bbq chicken and pork, Somtam and stuff.

I actually prefer that to the overpriced and low quality resort food.

bad idea, unless you want to be BBQ'd yourself.

I have seen Thai folks make their own BBQ with their own seafood right on Sangtien beach. But, it was 10 years ago and Im not sure if they asked around first or what. At your own peril I would say.

Koh Samed has changed a lot in 10 years.

and im guessing not for the better. sad.png

Probably a good idea to ban it as from what I've seen the smoke/smell disturbs other beach users and most often the area is not cleaned up properly afterwards.
