Impromptu shrines are springing up across Paris

PARIS: -- Candles and flowers have been left at the places where scores of people were killed and injured last Friday night.

But people are also gathering to pay their respects at the Place de la Republique in the city centre.

French Interior Minister Manuel Valls says the identity of 103 people has been established so far.

“20 to 30 people have not yet been identified. They will be in the coming hours but the wait is unbearable. I have spoken to the families and they have all told me of their immense pain. The nation must gather round these people, today and in the coming days.”

Some of the faces behind the headlines

Mathias and Mary from Metz in France had only been living in Paris since September. Now both are dead.

Pierre Innocenti was French and ran a restaurant in another area of Paris.

The sell-out concert was by a heavy-metal band and the audience was mainly young people of all nationalities.

Many of those killed were foreign nationals from countries as far apart as Chile and Tunisia.

Musician Cat Stevens sent his condolences to the family of music fan Nick Alexander from the UK.

Friends paid tribute to Italian Valeria Solesin on Facebook.

Algerian Kheireddine Sabhi also lost his life as did sisters Oda and Alima, who had travelled to Paris from Tunisia to celebrate a birthday.

The atrocity has touched many countries around the world. France is not alone.

"Ludovic Boumbas, born in Congo, was part of the group of friends who celebrated a birthday at La Belle Equipe, threw himself in front of a bullet to protect a woman and was shot. "
