TheFox
Just rented a bungalow in Thap Lan national park. When we got back from our trek tonight, we heard a very loud sound. At first we though it was a fire alarm of some sort. On closer inspection it seemed to come from a tall tree nearby. I can't stress enough how it was much louder than anything we'd heard coming from insects before. Here's a recording I made. https://www.dropbox.com/s/ugbznpuie3nwtb6/thatthing.mp3?dl=0 Would anyone be able to give us any indication as to what it might be? TheFox
It did sound similar to cicada, but the ones we have in Europe are nowhere near that noise level.
zyphodb
I think its a young Mantis of some sort, the older ones sound more like chain saws, we have them & Cicadas around me, it didn't sound like a Cicada to me, much more Mantis like... AlphMichaels
Wow. I've never heard animal nor insect that can make that kind of noise. Sure it's not man made?

talisman01
Where I lived the screeching insects would perform nightly at about 6.15pm every evening. Very pronounced, very loud and very co-ordinated. Here is my recording www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0ByfN6pCic
fasteddie
Blimey, you must be a stranger to these parts, that's a circada, they can be so loud as to hurt your eardrums. Welcome to Asia.
