The General Identification Department of the Ministry of Interior said that a birth certificate written by hand that places a commune in Takeo province in Vietnam is a forgery and that it will work with the relevant authorities to find who forged it and ensure the person is punished according to the law.

The department made the statement yesterday after a post of the birth certificate was shared on Facebook. The birth certificate says Phnom Din commune in Takeo province’s Kirivong district is part of Vietnam. Authorities say they are carefully checking the original copy kept in Kirivong district office to determine if it was written in Cambodia and not Vietnam.

“The birth certificate posted on Facebook is fake,” the statement said. It also said Facebook was being used to cause trouble and stressed that the department will cooperate with relevant authorities to find the perpetrators and punish them by law.

CNRP duo jailed for birth certificate ‘lies’
Sat, 21 November 2015

An official and a local activist were arrested and sent to court in Svay Rieng province’s Bavet town yesterday in connection with a Facebook post depicting a birth certificate insinuating that Svay Rieng is located in Vietnam.

Cambodia National Rescue Party commune councillor Norng Sarith, 42, who fills out birth certificates as part of his work, was charged with faking a public document, and local activist Sok Sam Ean, 38, was charged with incitement to commit a crime, according to a provincial police official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The birth certificate, dated November 2004 and bearing the name of Nhem Chhoeun, lists the place of birth as “Svay Rieng, Vietnam”, and was recently posted by Sam Ean, who fingered Sarith as its author, said Bavet commune police chief Mao Pin Pirom.
