BANGKOK: -- A man who was pretending to be a police inspector named "Jo" has been arrested along with a female accomplice for allegedly extorting money from motorbike taxies around Esplanade Cineplex Ratchadapisek in Bangkok.

Putiset Soisuwan, 40, and Nataya Klinpatum, 25, were arrested at a house in Bang Khen district on Saturday by police from Crime Suppression Division while allegedly in the process of committing extortion.

Pol Colonel Puntana Nuchanart, deputy of the Crime Suppression Division, said the pair was arrested after motorbike taxi-drivers near the Esplanade Cineplex Ratchadapisek complained about the behaviour of a notorious police inspector named "Jo".

They demanded the return of Bt3,950 that was extorted from each motorbike taxi driver for rental fee, cost of utilities, and a supposed bribe for authorities in the area.

Puntana said the couple was arrested after the police studied their actions and confirmed that they were doing what the motorcycle taxi-drivers had claimed.

He said the duo denied extorting money but did admit to asking the motorbike taxi-drivers to pay a rental fee. They said they were working on behalf of the landlord and denied the taxi-drivers' claim that they were collecting bribe money for the authorities. The pair said the motorbike drivers may have mistaken them for police due to their close relations with many police officers.

Puntana said the couple had no documents to prove that they were authorised by the landlord to collect money, so the police arrested them and summoned the landlord to provide an explanation.

What landlord? blink.png

They have a stand there, with a sofa, TV, kettle and usually a bucket of ice tea

Its on the corner in the left side and looks a bit like a living room without walls , I guess they have to "rent" that space from someone,

they must be doing OK if they can all afford a 4k fine even if they did complain about having to pay it later

BANGKOK: -- The long arm of the law has finally caught up with a man who has allegedly been posing as a cop and extorting Bangkok moto taxi drivers.

Puthiseth Soysuwan, 40, was arrested on Saturday night along with his suspected accomplice Nattaya Klinkprathum, 25, and the pair were charged with extortion, reported Bangkok Post.

A group of moto taxi drivers who work by the Esplanade shopping mall on Ratchadaphisek Road complained to cops that Puthiseth posed as a Crime Suppression Division inspector and ordered them to pay him almost 4,000 baht each month for "parking fees" and "water and electricity bills".

Amazing how all these police offices having been dobbed for some reason or other turn out to be 'fake' coffee1.gif

Good point there. We always wonder what all the cops transferred to inactive posts do nowadays.

This would seem to clarify that mystery.

Reminds me of "Hump? What hump?"

Just thought of something I'd like to add to the "Landlord" question.

One cannot even plonk down a towel on so-called public property (the beach) in Thailand without a landlord magically appearing out of the woodwork.

Something like this could give the real police a bad name as if they would charge people for rent and utility bills on public owned property that did not belong to them, sound like something that would have happened in Thailand pre first ever military coup but now with the military running the country and corruption a thing of the past we all know that the real police would never allow something like this to happen not on their beat.
