I backed up my Yosemite and did a clean install of El Capitan. I copied over what I wanted from the backup and iTunes and Photos works no problem. However iBooks is another story.

The files are encoded like this '0F98BBA60131024586F902BE48C50AA2.epub' and when I try to add them to the iBooks library I get the following message 'The file container 'xml' could not be opened' The files all have the extension.epub although there is a file inside with the extension .xml. This file is greyed out so cannot be altered.

The book files are in the right place according to what I have read.

I read around the subject but I cannot find any direct reference to importing this type of file. There are plenty of references to editing metadata in Calibre yet this seems to refer only to cover art.

Anyone have any ideas how to fix this problem? I had over 1000 books and trying to download them again will be a nightmare. Only a few came from the iTunes Store and they are not a problem.

Cailbre used to work for me to convert different types of book files so I could add them on my mobile devices through iTunes. I haven't tried it since I updated my OS to El Capitan, but I have all the book files on a backup drive, Just got done with putting a SSD in my MacBook Pro, and haven't got around to a lot of things yet. Try adding the files to iTunes, that's what I did with movies and music...

Thanks for the replies. Calibre definitely doesn't work. Epubor only lets you download a PC version for a free trial or pay US39.95 for the full mac version. I wasn't going to pay out for something that may not work. I don't have windows installed on my mac.

Anyway a very weird thing happened this afternoon. All my books were back in iBooks and I can open them and read them. I remember yesterday adding the encrypted files to iBooks. All I can think of is has taken this long to decrypt them all. I did notice that the mac seemed slow today so it may have been a background process decrypting the files. It is definitely faster now.

Sorry to hi-jack the thread but did you replace your optical drive in your mb-pro and add the SSD there? Just curious as the Mac guy in Pattaya told me he doesn't have the SSD caddy to do this. He only offered to replace the existing HDD. I'll probably do it myself, if I can get hold of a caddy & decent SSD (500gb).

I only replace the main drive with a 500 GB SSD as my HD died. Usually people replace the boot drive with an SSD and put a large HD in the optical port. I paid about 7,000 Baht for a Samsung SSD at a place in Phuket. But I saw them online a bit cheaper as well as caddies. As long as it's a SATA drive it should fit in the caddy or the boot drive space. It's pretty easy to do. Just remember to reformat the drive from disk utilities or you see the drive.
